Teacher of Art in Brighton

Brighton College is seeking toappoint a Teacher of Art on a part-time (0.6 FTE) fixed-term contract, starting January 2027, or earlier if possible, and ending in December 2027.

The Department

Brighton College has an outstanding reputationfor its Art teaching and is a centre of excellence.The subject is vibrant, popular and high profile.The Art department comprises six membersofteaching staff and two art technicians. Art istaught throughout the College from Year 7 toYear 13. The Art Department at Brighton Collegehas some of the best results at A-level and GCSEin the country. This success has continued inrecent years, and in 2026 the departmentachieved 100% A*-A at A-level, alongside equallyimpressive results at GCSE. All students studyArt in Years 7 and 8, with many choosing tocontinue their studies in Year 9 and beyond.

The Art Departments are housed in thepurpose-built Alexander Centre for Visual Arts,which provides magnificent opportunities forBrighton College Artists and Photographers. Diverse programmes of visual and writtenactivities are offered, which are reflected in eachpupil’s sketchbook and larger scale work, whichbecome more personal as the years progress. AtGCSE level, the emphasis ofthe teaching is towards the pupils’ individual development, andthis requires a sympathetic, patient andopenminded approach. There are 139 pupilsstudying for GCSEs in the Art and Photography department, and 36 at A-level, and results have been consistently exceptional. Over the past sixyears, 70 Brighton College pupils were acceptedinto Art Colleges for Foundation and direct entry Degree courses at The Slade, Kingston,Falmouth, Canterbury, Chelsea, Wimbledon,Central St. Martin’s, London College of Fashion,Glasgow School of Art andNationalCollegeofArtinDublin,Bath, Dundee and Newcastle.Pupils have also gained places to studyArchitecture alongside Art History, which is apopular destination especially to UCL,Cambridge, Durham, Reading andSt. Andrews.

Role Specification

The College is seeking an outstanding artist andteacher who can communicate their own skills,expertise and passion for the visual arts,inspiring pupils to realise their full potential as artists. The successful candidate will encouragepupils to develop confidence, technicalproficiency and originality in their artisticpractice, while fostering a lifelong appreciationof the visual arts. They willcontribute to a cultureof intellectual curiosity, academic excellence,and creative achievement.The successful candidate will be expected toteach Art across the curriculum, from Year 7 toA-level, and will be expected to contributetowards the department’s extension programme,including a willingness to support pupils withapplications to leading Art Colleges.

The Art Department is also busy outside thetimetable and there are evening sessions anddaily activity slots, which are a popular time forpupils to visit the studios. The successful candidate will be expected to take a share of thesupervision of these daily and at times weekendextracurricular activities.

Additionally, all teachers at Brighton College areexpected to contribute to the school’s pastoral system, generally as a tutor in one of our 16houses (of which six are boarding houses andten are day).

There is also an expectation that all teachers willcontribute to the cocurricular life of the school,through the extensive Games programme, and/or through the leadership of one of over 100school societies.

Candidates are encouraged to point to interestsand enthusiasms as part of their application. Allstaff have the opportunity to contribute to ourMasterclass programme; this is a series ofweekly lessons designed to celebrate theenjoyment of learning, focusing on an area ofpersonal academic or cultural interest. Thesehave included subjects such as Magical Realism,Cuisine andCultureand Great Debates inHistory.

All teachers joining Brighton will have the benefitof guidance by an experienced mentor, whoserole it will be to provide support during theirprobationary period. Thereafter, all teachers areexpected and supported to participate incontinuous professional development, throughout their time at the College.
