Full time hours 1.0 FTE/ 37.5 hours per week. Core working hours are 09:00 - 17:00 Monday to Friday. Requests for flexible working options will be considered (subject to business need). The role holder will be required to work in person from the Shawcross building on campus at least three days per week. Grade 7 starting at £38,784 to £46,049 per annum, pro rata if part time. Contract Type Permanent.

About the role

We are looking for a Research Computing Engineer to join our Digital Research Services team and support researchers across the University in their use of specialist digital research platforms. In this role, you will work directly with researchers to support their effective use of High Performance Computing (HPC), research cloud services, and data storage solutions. You will provide hands‑on technical support for research computing workflows, software, and data‑intensive applications, helping researchers overcome technical challenges and make best use of shared platforms. You will contribute to the operation and ongoing development of digital research services, resolve escalated technical issues, install and configure research software using automation tools, and support good practice in data handling and security. Working closely with colleagues, you will help document requirements, applications, and contribute to the maintenance of clear technical documentation and user guidance. This role offers the opportunity to build and apply broad technical skills in a research‑intensive, collaborative environment, supporting a range of disciplines and research projects.

About you

We are looking for a technically capable and motivated individual with an interest in how digital technologies support research. This role may particularly suit someone who has recently completed a relevant postgraduate degree (for example in computing, data science, engineering, or a data‑intensive scientific discipline) and is keen to apply their knowledge in practice. You will have broad technical skills and be comfortable working across different systems, tools, and research environments rather than specialising narrowly in a single technology. You will be able to rapidly assimilate new technical knowledge and apply it effectively and be confident in engaging independently with researchers and colleagues beyond the immediate team. You should enjoy troubleshooting problems, learning from existing documentation, and working directly with users to support real research needs. An organised, adaptable, and user‑focused mindset is essential, along with a willingness to continue developing your expertise as part of a small specialist team.

This role may be eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route. The assigned SOC code is 2139: Information technology professionals not elsewhere classified and the going rate is £52,300. Eligibility for sponsorship will depend on whether a candidate can make use of tradeable points to meet the salary offered and whether the candidate holds an existing Skilled Worker sponsorship which began before 4 April 2024. The University requires that work undertaken for the University is performed in the UK.
