Salary: Salary up to £55,000 • Location: ManchesterPayroll Quality Checker and Compliance ReviewerSalary up to £55,000LocationManchesterPurposeWe are looking for a highly organised and detail-focused Payroll Quality Checker and Compliance Reviewer to review payroll calculations, employee data and payroll outputs before submission and payment.The role will provide an independent second-level check of payroll processing, identify errors or compliance risks, ensure that payroll controls have been completed, and support the accurate and timely delivery of payroll services to clients and employees.The successful candidate will review payroll amendments against source information, validate payslips and payroll reports, assess audit trails, and ensure that key checks are recorded on the relevant control sheets and validation checklists. These responsibilities reflect the existing peer review, audit and spot-check processes used within payroll operations.Reports toHead of Payroll Compliance & Quality AssuranceHours of workMonday – Friday 8:30am – 5pmDay-to-day responsibilities include but are not limited to the below:Carry out independent peer reviews of completed payroll runs before client approval or finalisation.Reconcile payroll amendments and client-submitted information to employee records, payroll reports and individual payslips.Check that part-period and pro-rata salary calculations have been processed accurately.Review tax codes, student loan information, National Insurance categories and applicable PAYE notices.Review pension opt-in and opt-out changes and confirm that pension contributions have been calculated correctly.Perform National Minimum Wage checks and investigate any potential discrepancies.Validate court orders, DEA deductions, benefits, company car information and other statutory or contractual deductions.Check that sickness, unpaid leave and other absences are correctly reflected in payroll and on payslips.Review payroll system audit records to identify and assess amendments made during the payroll process.Perform reasonableness checks on gross pay, taxable pay, deductions, employer costs and net pay totals.Review payment files to confirm the correct pay date and net pay values before payment processing.Support checks that FPS/RTI submissions are completed accurately and on or before the required deadline.Reconcile pension contribution files and totals before submission to the relevant workplace pension portal.Ensure completed checks are recorded accurately on the pre-validation checklist, payroll control sheet and other approved records.Raise errors, omissions or compliance concerns with the Payroll Administrator or Payroll Manager and track them through to resolution.Ensure that any amended payroll run is reviewed again where required before approval or finalisation.Maintain accurate and confidential payroll records in accordance with company procedures and data protection requirements.Contribute to the improvement of payroll controls, checklists, procedures and quality assurance processes.Compliance and Control AreasThe role will be responsible for reviewing payroll against relevant company procedures and applicable payroll requirements, including:PAYE tax and National Insurance processing.HMRC tax code and PAYE notice updates.Real Time Information, including FPS and EPS submissions where applicable.Workplace pension assessment, auto-enrolment and contribution calculations. *National Minimum Wage compliance.Student loan deductions.Statutory payments and absence-related adjustments.Attachment of earnings and DEA deductions.Payroll deadlines, client approvals and payment controls.Audit trails, segregation of duties and evidence of completed reviews.The reviewer will be expected to verify that payroll results are supported by appropriate source data and that the completion of the review is evidenced on the relevant control documentation.Required Experience and QualificationsPrevious experience in payroll processing, payroll administration, payroll quality assurance or payroll compliance.Good working knowledge of UK payroll processes and PAYE legislation.Experience reviewing payroll calculations, payslips and payroll reports.Experience using payroll softwareStrong understanding of payroll controls, reconciliations and audit trails.Experience of reviewing pension deductions and workplace pension processes.Excellent attention to detail and the ability to identify small errors or inconsistencies.Ability to work to strict payroll deadlines and manage competing priorities.Strong written and verbal communication skills.Ability to handle confidential employee and client information appropriately.Desirable:Payroll qualification, such as CIPP Foundation, Payroll Technician Certificate or equivalent experience.Experience with HMRC Government Gateway or workplace pension portals.Experience working in an outsourced or managed payroll environment.Knowledge of payroll reconciliation, of payroll risks and discrepancies.Required skills and experienceDeep understanding of UK payroll legislation and tax regulations, being either CIPP qualified or qualified by experience.Excellent IT skills, with the ability to quickly adapt to new HR and Payroll systems and other products, such as Microsoft Excel.High level of communication skills and the ability to collaborate with internal and
