Background: Cycling Scotland’s vision is a sustainable, inclusive and healthy Scotland where anyone, anywhere can enjoy all the benefits of cycling. The internship is funded by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport and delivered in partnership between Cycling Scotland, Bright Green Business, and Glasgow Caledonian University. Projects supported by the intern will contribute to and align with the key aims of the Active Travel Framework.

The Role: Working in partnership with Bright Green Business with the support of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, Cycling Scotland seek to identify interns to support cycling development projects in further and higher education campuses across the SPT region. The candidate will take on the role of Campus Cycling Officer (CCO) and support the Sustainability Team in delivering cycling projects and activities aimed at getting students and staff travelling by bike. With support from a mentor, the CCO will be tasked with the responsibility of designing, planning, implementing and evaluating a cycling project. This will include improving campus facilities, organising events/training, and improving overall engagement in cycling.

Key Duties:

  • Support the preparation, development, and delivery of cycling initiatives on campus in order to support behaviour change and progress towards/maintain Cycling Friendly status.
  • Gather and analyse data relating to cycling activity, in order to prepare relevant information and recommendations to colleagues, stakeholders and sponsors.
  • Develop and/or deliver funding bids for capital infrastructure funding.
  • Support the improvement and extension of facilities supporting commuting cycling, such as cycle storage.
  • Develop and maintain effective partnerships which support the institution’s efforts to make cycling an attractive travel choice, linking in with wider programmes, initiatives, and events.
  • Establish, develop and/or maintain appropriate communication channel(s) relevant to cycling development projects and events for staff and students.
  • Lead on the design, planning, implementation and evaluation of a cycling project(s) and activities which reflect key priorities and feedback from stakeholder engagement.
  • Using the Cycling Friendly award criteria, assist colleagues to develop and maintain an up-to-date Cycling Action Plan which will form the basis of future funding bids / opportunities and delivery of cycling initiatives.
  • Raise awareness of relevant schemes aimed at supporting cycling as a commuting mode, including new active travel infrastructure projects, e.g., Glasgow Avenues project.
  • Develop a communication and engagement plan that aims to provide regular events addressing the needs of staff and student cyclists.

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for and appreciation of the benefits of cycling.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong presentation and reporting skills.
  • Ability to motivate and influence others.
  • Ability to manage own workload and contribute to team objectives.
  • Knowledge of active travel, environmental, health and sustainability programmes and initiatives in Scotland.
  • Experience of workshop and event planning and delivery.
  • Experience of creating action plans and developing strategies.
  • Experience of engaging and managing stakeholders.
  • Experience of managing projects and budgets.
  • Recent graduate (up to 3 years) or equivalent knowledge and experience, having graduated from university or college with a Degree, Master’s, or HND/C equivalent.
