Looking for more from your career in accounting and finance?
Perhaps you're working in accountancy practice, preparing accounts and meeting deadlines, but you'd like to get closer to the businesses behind the numbers.
Or maybe you're working in industry, enjoying management accounting, but would love the opportunity to work with a variety of businesses rather than just one.
Either way, we'd love to hear from you.
Who are Bright Beany?
We founded Bright Beany in 2021 with a simple idea: growing businesses deserve access to a proper finance team, not just an accountant who prepares their year-end accounts.
Today, we're a growing, independent accountancy and finance business working with ambitious, founder-led companies, typically turning over between £500k and £10m.
We're their Virtual Finance Department.
We look after the whole finance function, from bookkeeping, payroll, VAT and statutory accounts through to monthly management accounts, forecasting and strategic financial support.
Our founders, Max and Katy, both trained at KPMG before spending years working in senior finance roles in industry.
We bring that experience into the way we support our clients, combining the technical skills of an accountancy practice with the commercial understanding of an in-house finance team.
We're a small, ambitious team where everyone has an important part to play.
The role
You'll be a key member of our client delivery team, taking responsibility for producing accurate, meaningful financial information and building relationships with the businesses we support.
Management accounts and financial reporting
- Prepare monthly and quarterly management accounts for a portfolio of clients.
- Own month-end processes, including reconciliations, accruals, prepayments and journals.
- Investigate variances, identify issues and help clients understand their financial performance.
- Ensure financial information is accurate, complete and delivered on time.
- Assist with budgets, cash flow forecasts and other financial analysis.
- Work with Max and Katy to deliver more complex financial reporting and advisory projects.
Client relationships
- Become the main day-to-day finance contact for a portfolio of smaller clients.
- Build strong relationships and develop an understanding of how their businesses operate.
- Answer client queries, explain financial information and identify issues requiring further support.
- Take responsibility for following through on tasks and delivering on commitments.
Statutory accounts and compliance
- Prepare statutory accounts and supporting working papers, with training and support where required.
- Assist with year-end adjustments, reconciliations and accounting queries.
- Work alongside colleagues to ensure clients' statutory and compliance requirements are met.
Team development and continuous improvement
- Support trainees and junior colleagues with bookkeeping, reconciliations and day-to-day accounting.
- Review work, offer feedback and help maintain high standards.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, reporting and workflows.
- Make the most of Xero, Dext and other finance technology to streamline how we and our clients work.
- Contribute ideas to help shape the future of Bright Beany.
What we're looking for
We're more interested in what you can do, how you think and where you want to go than the exact route you've taken to get here.
Essential experience and skills
- AAT Level 4 qualified with relevant post-qualification experience, or part-qualified / qualified ACCA, ACA or CIMA.
- Strong practical experience preparing management accounts or statutory accounts.
- Excellent working knowledge of Xero. You'll be confident with reconciliations, journals, reporting and maintaining accurate financial records.
- Familiarity with Dext and other cloud accounting technology.
- Sound understanding of bookkeeping, VAT and accounting principles.
- Excellent attention to detail and organisation.
- Confidence communicating with clients and colleagues.
- The ability to take responsibility for your work, spot problems and find solutions.
The person behind the CV
We're looking for someone who's naturally curious. Who wants to understand what our clients do and interpret the numbers to help them be successful.
Someone who takes pride in their work, enjoys solving problems and is comfortable asking questions.
Someone who wants responsibility, isn't afraid to challenge how things are done and genuinely enjoys helping other people.
You’ll need to be comfortable working in a small, growing business, where priorities can change and everyone sometimes needs to get stuck in.
Above all, we're looking for someone who wants to learn and grow with us.
Learn directly from experienced Finance Directors.
You’ll work closely with Max and Katy, gaining exposure to how experienced finance leaders approach accounting, reporting, commercial challenges and business decision-making.
Do work that matters.
You’ll get to know the businesses you support, speak directly with owners and see how your work makes a difference.
Have real ownership.
You’ll have responsibility for your clients and the freedom to contribute ideas and improve how we do things.
Help build something.
We’re an ambitious, growing business. Joining at this stage gives you the opportunity to help shape our services, processes and culture.
Build your career.
We want this role to develop into something bigger. There’s a clear progression pathway from Client Finance Partner to Senior Client Finance Partner and ultimately Client Finance Manager, subject to your development and the opportunities created as we grow.
Use modern technology.
We’re a Xero-focused practice that embraces technology and continuously looks for better ways to support clients.
Salary and benefits
- Salary of £35,000–£42,000, depending on experience.
- 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays.
- An additional day off for your birthday.
- Hybrid working: three days in the Nottingham office and two days working from home.
- Private medical insurance
- Study support for relevant professional qualifications, agreed individually based on your development plans.
- Regular team socials and events.
- A modern Nottingham city centre office.
- Direct access to the founders and opportunities for professional development.
Sound interesting?
We’d love to hear what you enjoy about accounting, what you’re looking for in your next role and why Bright Beany appeals to you.
