Summary

The Technical Specialist is a highly skilled role within specialty laboratory areas such of microbiology.This role requires advanced technical knowledge and proficiency.

As Testing Personnel under CLIA, the Technical Specialist may perform both waived and non-waived testing. Working under general supervision, they adhere to departmental policies and standard operating procedures to ensure the accurate performance, interpretation, and reporting of test results critical to patient diagnosis and treatment.

In their role as a Technical Supervisor or General Supervisor under CLIA, the Technical Specialist may also be responsible for the technical oversight of training areas, including day-to-day supervision of lab operations related to testing personnel.

Specifically, the Technical Specialist – Education works under the guidance of the Technical Director and Clinical Supervisors to supervise trainees at their assigned workstations, with responsibilities including quality control (QC) review, training, and competency assessments of laboratory staff.

Essential Functions

After successful completion of orientation, training, and competency assessments on all applicable instruments and methods, the Technical Specialist will:

Perform specimen processing, test analysis, and result reporting, following all laboratory procedures.

Ensure that proficiency testing samples are processed and analyzed identically to patient samples.

Adhere to quality control protocols, and document all QC activities, equipment calibrations, and maintenance.

Follow corrective action procedures when test systems fall outside acceptable performance standards.

Identify and resolve issues affecting test performance or escalate them to the appropriate supervisor or director.

Document all corrective actions taken for deviations in test performance, per CLIA regulations.

Training And Educational Oversight Responsibilities

Develop, document, maintain, and implement training programs, including competency assessments for new procedures introduced in the Specialty Labs.

Manage the competency review process in collaboration with Supervisors, the Technical Director, and the Compliance Officer as needed.

Review and approve all training documentation, ensuring records are accurately maintained in the MediaLab Compass module, with support from Senior Technologists and administrative staff.

Contribute to SOP development with an education-focused lens when new processes are introduced.

Determine when new competencies or updates to existing training materials are necessary, ensuring alignment with current workflows.

Develop training procedures for technical staff and students, including those from affiliated programs and the MGB MLS Training Program.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor\’s Degree Medical Technology required or Bachelor\’s Degree Laboratory Sciences required

Licenses and Credentials

Medical Technologist (ASCP) – American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) required

Experience

Experience in a Specialty Laboratory 3-5 years required

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • The knowledge, both practical and theoretical, of tests and procedures necessary to review findings and advise and direct subordinates in action.
  • Demonstrates advanced level of analytical skills and judgement.
  • Must have understanding of computer technology and its application to analytical procedures and quality control.
  • Must have a comprehensive understanding of laboratory equipment and its operation, maintenance and repair and analytic techniques.
  • Must have the ability to work independently, evaluate situations and act appropriately.
  • Detailed knowledge of applicable federal, state and accreditation requirements.
  • Ability to multitask and manage validations and projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of test principles, equipment operation and computer system operations.
  • Make appropriate decisions, develop and complete follow-up actions in conjunction with lab leadership.
  • Must be able to perform as a senior team member, providing direction and guidance to less experienced technologists.
  • Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols, including communication to supervisors when issues are identified.
  • Must be able to perform as a team member.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with numerous staff including physicians, hospital personnel, employees, and patients.
