An established and highly respected specialist geotechnical and environmental consultancy is seeking a Senior / Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join its South England team. With a strong reputation for delivering high-quality ground investigation and geotechnical services across infrastructure, rail, construction and development sectors, this business offers technically challenging projects, a collaborative culture and clear progression for ambitious engineers. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced geotechnical professional looking to step into a leadership-focused role with responsibility across project delivery, team development and client management.

The Role

Based from the South England office, you will take responsibility for the successful delivery of multiple site investigation and geotechnical projects from contract award through to completion and financial close. This is a senior role requiring strong technical, commercial and operational leadership, with involvement across project management, technical oversight, mentoring and business development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Full management of multiple ground investigation and geotechnical projects from award to completion
  • Responsibility for technical, commercial, HSEQ and financial performance across assigned projects
  • Delivery of factual reporting, invoicing and project financial management
  • Planning and coordination of site teams, subcontractors, plant and equipment
  • Preparation and management of RAMS, construction phase plans and environmental documentation
  • Technical review of logs, reports and testing schedules
  • Monitoring project progress against milestones, budgets and client expectations
  • Client liaison throughout project lifecycle, ensuring excellent service delivery
  • Identification and management of contract variations and commercial changes
  • Mentoring, training and technical support for junior engineers and site staff
  • Contribution to tender support, fee proposals and business development initiatives
  • Supporting office growth strategy and operational performance improvements

Preferred Qualifications:

We are keen to speak with experienced geotechnical professionals who can combine strong technical expertise with commercial awareness and leadership capability. You will ideally have:

  • 8+ years' experience within ground investigation or geotechnical engineering
  • Degree in Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering or similar
  • Strong understanding of site investigation project delivery from planning through to reporting
  • Experience managing project budgets, invoicing and commercial performance
  • Solid technical grounding in geotechnical investigations, testing and factual reporting
  • Strong knowledge of HSEQ processes and safe delivery of site operations
  • Excellent client-facing communication skills
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers / site teams
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable Experience

  • Chartered or working toward Chartership
  • Rail sector experience / PTS certification
  • SMSTS
  • CSCS Management Card
  • Risk Assessment training
  • Experience within business development or tender support
