The Opportunity
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Geologist / Engineering Geologist to join an established ground investigation contractor based in Durham.
This role is suited to a geologist with at least two years' UK ground investigation experience who is looking to continue developing their site supervision, logging, reporting and project-delivery skills.
You will be involved in the delivery of ground investigation projects across a range of sectors, working closely with project managers, drilling teams, subcontractors and clients to ensure investigations are completed safely, accurately and to the required technical standard.
The position offers the chance to gain further responsibility on site, develop your technical knowledge and progress within a growing ground investigation team.

The Role
As Geologist / Engineering Geologist, you will support the planning, supervision and delivery of ground investigation works.
You will attend sites, supervise drilling activities, log soil and rock samples, prepare site records and assist with laboratory scheduling and reporting.
The role will involve a mix of site-based and office-based duties, with travel to project locations as required.
Key Responsibilities
Site Investigation Delivery
- Supervise ground investigation works on site
- Assist with site mobilisation, set-up and demobilisation
- Liaise with drilling crews, subcontractors, project managers and clients
- Monitor site progress and report any delays, changes or technical issues
- Ensure works are completed in line with project specifications and method statements
- Maintain accurate site records, daily logs and investigation documentation
- Ensure samples are correctly labelled, recorded, stored and transported
- Support the safe and efficient delivery of ground investigation projects
- Supervise intrusive investigation techniques including cable percussion, rotary drilling, window sampling and trial pits
- Monitor drilling progress, sample recovery and ground conditions
- Record groundwater strikes and relevant site observations
- Support groundwater and ground-gas monitoring where required
- Assist with in-situ testing and sampling activities
- Ensure investigation works are completed safely and accurately
- Undertake soil and rock logging to current geotechnical standards
- Prepare borehole, trial pit and window sample logs
- Identify and describe soil and rock strata encountered on site
- Select samples for geotechnical and environmental laboratory testing
- Prepare and manage laboratory testing schedules
- Review field records for accuracy and completeness
- Interpret geological maps and published geological information where required
- Assist with the preparation of factual ground investigation reports
- Process field data and laboratory results
- Prepare site plans, schedules, photographs and technical appendices
- Provide clear site information to project managers and reporting teams
- Highlight unexpected ground conditions or technical concerns
- Support office-based project work between site assignments
- Communicate clearly with internal teams and external stakeholders
- Follow company health, safety, environmental and quality procedures
- Work in accordance with approved RAMS and site documentation
- Attend site inductions, briefings and toolbox talks
- Monitor safe working practices across investigation activities
- Report hazards, incidents and near misses promptly
- Maintain high standards of site housekeeping and environmental control
- Ensure technical work is completed accurately and to required standards
We are looking for a practical, motivated and reliable geologist with previous UK ground investigation experience.
You should be confident working on active investigation sites, supervising drilling activities and producing accurate geological records.
Strong communication skills, attention to detail and a proactive approach to health and safety will be important. You should also be comfortable travelling to sites and working independently when required.
Essential Requirements
- Minimum 2 years' UK ground investigation experience
- Degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, Earth Science, Environmental Geoscience or a related discipline
- Experience supervising intrusive ground investigation works
- Ability to log soil and rock to current geotechnical standards
- Understanding of common UK ground investigation techniques
- Knowledge of soil and rock descriptions and site investigation records
- Experience preparing accurate site notes, logs and documentation
- Basic understanding of laboratory scheduling
- Awareness of groundwater and ground-gas monitoring techniques
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail
- Strong awareness of site health and safety requirements
- Full UK driving licence
- Willingness to travel to project sites when required
- Experience with cable percussion, rotary drilling, window sampling and trial pits
- Familiarity with BS 5930
- Experience assisting with factual ground investigation reports
- Knowledge of geotechnical and geo-environmental sampling procedures
- CSCS card
- CAT and Genny training
- First Aid or other relevant site qualifications
- Experience working on residential, commercial, infrastructure or development projects
- Working towards professional membership or Chartership
