Due to an increase in workload, our client is seeking a Geotechnical Designer to join a respected multidisciplinary engineering consultancy supporting major UK infrastructure and civil engineering projects. This is a technically focused design role, working at the interface between geotechnical analysis, engineering design, and construction delivery. You will play a key part in producing robust, buildable geotechnical designs and high-quality technical outputs for a range of challenging ground engineering schemes.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and produce geotechnical designs for foundations, retaining structures, slopes, embankments, and temporary works.
- Undertake geotechnical analysis and calculations to support detailed design and construction.
- Prepare technical drawings, sketches, and design deliverables in collaboration with engineering teams.
- Interpret ground investigation data to inform design solutions and reduce project risk.
- Work closely with civil, structural, and temporary works engineers to integrate geotechnical design into multidisciplinary projects.
- Support the preparation of design reports, technical notes, and calculations.
- Assist with constructability reviews and provide design input during construction stages.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant UK standards, codes, and industry best practice.
The ideal candidate will have experience using some of the following:
- Geotechnical analysis and design software, such as: PLAXIS (2D/3D), Slope/W (GeoStudio), WALLAP / FREW, GGU (Retain, Stability, Settle), Oasys Suite (Slope, Adsec, Wallap or similar).
- Engineering and design tools, including: AutoCAD or Civil 3D for geotechnical detailing, Excel for calculations and technical spreadsheets, GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS or QGIS) for ground data interpretation (desirable).
- UK ground conditions and engineering geology.
- Soil mechanics and geotechnical design principles.
- Eurocodes and relevant British Standards (e.g., BS 8002, BS EN 1997).
- Ground investigation data interpretation and its application to design.
- Degree (BSc or MSc) in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, or related discipline.
- Typically 3 to 6 years' experience in a geotechnical design role within consultancy or contracting.
- Proven experience producing geotechnical calculations and design outputs.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong technical writing and communication skills.
