An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Civil Engineer to join the York office of a growing, employee-owned engineering consultancy. Working alongside experienced engineers both in the office and on site, you will develop your technical knowledge and gradually take greater responsibility for the design, analysis and delivery of engineering projects.

You will support the preparation of calculations, designs, drawings, specifications and technical reports across a varied project portfolio. As your confidence and experience develop, you will also gain exposure to client liaison, tender preparation, project planning and the management of project time and budgets. Around 70% of its workload is design work within the rail sector, with the remaining projects covering transportation, energy, heavy civil engineering and structural engineering. The Role

As Civil Engineer, you will work closely with senior engineers and project managers on the technical delivery of civil and structural engineering projects. Your responsibilities will initially be carried out with guidance and supervision, with increasing independence as your skills and experience develop. The role will combine office-based design work with site visits, inspections and surveys. Some overnight or weekend work may occasionally be required depending on project needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineering Design
    • Assist with the preparation of civil and structural engineering designs
    • Undertake calculations under the guidance of experienced engineers
    • Support the development of practical and cost-effective engineering solutions
    • Prepare technical reports, specifications, schedules and design information
    • Assist with the production and review of technical drawings
    • Apply relevant British Standards, Eurocodes and industry guidance
    • Use appropriate analysis, design and drafting software
    • Maintain accurate design records and supporting documentation
    • Work in accordance with the company's Quality Assurance Management System
  • Project Delivery
    • Support senior engineers with project planning and delivery
    • Work to agreed project programmes, deadlines and budgets
    • Monitor allocated design hours and provide progress updates
    • Assist with project documentation and technical submissions
    • Help identify engineering risks, constraints and design issues
    • Coordinate information with other engineers and project disciplines
    • Support the delivery of work from initial concept through to completion
    • Communicate effectively with project managers and senior team members
  • Drawings and Technical Information
    • Support the preparation of technical drawings and specifications
    • Assist with the development of design details and construction information
    • Use AutoCAD and other relevant engineering software
    • Check drawings and documents for accuracy and consistency
    • Incorporate comments and amendments from senior engineers
    • Help ensure technical information is issued correctly and on time
  • Site Work
    • Attend site visits, inspections and surveys under supervision
    • Assist with collecting measurements and technical information
    • Record site observations clearly and accurately
    • Support the preparation of inspection records and site reports
    • Liaise professionally with contractors and site representatives
    • Follow company and client health and safety procedures
    • Travel to project locations when required
  • Tenders and Commercial Support
    • Assist with the preparation of fee proposals and tender submissions
    • Help review project scopes and client requirements
    • Support the preparation of technical and commercial information
    • Develop an understanding of project budgets and consultancy fees
    • Gain experience of the full project lifecycle, including winning and delivering work
    • Assist with monitoring time spent against project budgets
  • Client and Team Liaison
    • Attend project, design and client meetings where appropriate
    • Prepare information and presentations for internal and external meetings
    • Communicate clearly with colleagues, clients and project stakeholders
    • Work collaboratively with engineers, technicians and project managers
    • Develop confidence in client liaison as experience grows
    • Contribute positively to a supportive and professional team environment
  • Professional Development

    • Work towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status

About You

You will be a motivated Civil or Structural Engineering graduate with a genuine interest in developing a career within an engineering consultancy. You should have strong attention to detail, good communication skills and the ability to approach technical problems logically and practically. You will be proactive, adaptable and comfortable working both independently and as part of a wider project team. A positive attitude, willingness to learn and commitment to professional development will be essential.

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Degree from an ICE or IStructE-accredited course
  • Minimum 2:1 degree classification or equivalent
  • Commitment to working towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status
  • Sound understanding of civil or structural engineering principles
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prepare clear calculations and technical information
  • Good numerical and analytical ability
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload
  • Competence using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proactive, flexible and willing to learn
  • Willingness to undertake site visits

Desirable Experience

  • Previous engineering internship or placement
  • Relevant university project or practical engineering experience
  • Knowledge of engineering analysis and design software
  • Experience using AutoCAD
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Civil 3D
  • Familiarity with Bentley MicroStation
  • Awareness of British Standards and Eurocodes
  • Previous exposure to rail, transportation or heavy civil engineering projects
  • Full clean UK driving licence
