Bridgend County Borough Council is seeking a skilled and motivated Outreach Learning Support Officer to join the Sensory Team. We are a dynamic service dedicated to supporting settings and schools in meeting the needs of deaf children and young people across the county.
About the Team / Service Area:
The Team works closely with schools, families, and partner agencies to provide early intervention, targeted support, and specialist guidance. The team delivers consultation, outreach, assessment and capacity‑building for settings and school staff to improve outcomes for learners.
About the Role:
As an Outreach Learning Support Officer, you will play a key role in delivering inclusive, high‑quality, communication support to children, settings and schools. Working as part of a collaborative team, you will:
- Provide targeted interventions, modelling effective strategies and practical approaches.
- Support the development of communication, language and learning.
- Follow and deliver specialist programmes under the guidance of the Qualified Teacher of Deaf.
- Provide in class communication support and facilitate access to learning and the environment.
- Work with the team to offer guidance, training, and capacity‑building for settings and school staff.
- Contribute to multi‑agency planning and child‑centred problem‑solving.
- Undertake outreach visits to settings and schools when required.
- Help monitor, review, and evaluate individual plans to ensure positive outcomes for learners.

We are looking for an individual who demonstrates:
Skills & Knowledge:- Strong understanding of child development, communication needs and how to support children and young people in accessing the curriculum.
- Knowledge of inclusive communication approaches and deaf awareness in educational settings.
- Confident British Sign Language user.
- Ability to offer practical advice and model effective strategies for staff.
- Skilled at building positive, trusting relationships with learners, families, and professionals.
- Good ICT skills to support learning, record information and present it clearly.
- Experience of working with deaf children and young people, particularly those who use British Sign Language (BSL) to communicate.
- Experience supporting schools or educational settings is highly desirable.
- Experience contributing to plans such as One Page Profiles, Reasonable Adjustments and delivering deaf awareness.
- Compassionate, patient, and child‑centred.
- Confident communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
- Adaptable, reflective, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Able to remain calm and solution‑focused in challenging situations.
- Relevant Level 3 qualification (or equivalent experience) in education, childcare, youth work, ALN, or related field.
- Level 3 qualification in British Sign Language or above.
- Commitment to ongoing professional learning.
- Full driving licence and use of own vehicle during working hours to undertake agreed outreach visits is essential.
- The ability to greet customers through the medium of Welsh is a requirement for this post.
Protecting children, young people or adults at risk is a core responsibility of all council employees. An Enhanced with Children's Barred list criminal records check by the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) is a requirement for this post.
