Built on meritocracy, our unique company culture rewards self-starters and those who are committed to doing what is best for our customers.

At Brown & Brown (Europe), you’ll help build and evolve digital products that support core customer journeys across our insurance and property platforms. Working as part of a cross-functional agile delivery squad, you’ll contribute to modern, cloud-hosted services running in Microsoft Azure and help deliver secure, scalable, and well-engineered solutions that support both product change and live service. This is an opportunity to work on platforms with real business impact, alongside experienced product, engineering, and quality colleagues, in an environment that values ownership, continuous improvement, and practical delivery.

We are looking for a Software Engineer or Lead Software Engineer, depending on your experience and the level at which you can contribute. You will report to the Tech Lead and work within an agile delivery squad responsible for building, improving, and supporting digital services in Azure Cloud. The squad follows a build-and-run model, meaning engineers contribute to both change delivery and the ongoing support, stability, and improvement of the services they help create.

The role is hands-on and suited to engineers who can work across modern web applications, APIs, cloud-hosted services, and delivery pipelines. For candidates operating at Lead Software Engineer level, we would expect broader technical leadership, stronger ownership of solution design, and the ability to guide engineering standards, mentor others, and shape how the squad delivers.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Building and enhancing front-end and back-end services using technologies aligned to our current platform landscape.
  • Developing secure, maintainable, and well-tested code across user-facing applications, APIs, background services, and supporting components.
  • Working within an Azure-hosted, service-based architecture with responsibility for quality, resilience, and operational readiness.
  • Contributing to solution design, technical implementation, and continuous improvement of the platforms and services owned by the squad.
  • Supporting CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, and engineering practices that improve delivery speed, safety, and repeatability.
  • Participating in agile ceremonies including stand-ups, sprint planning, backlog refinement, retrospectives, and demos.
  • Taking part in code reviews, collaborative design discussions, and knowledge-sharing across the team.
  • Working closely with QA and product colleagues to ensure features are clearly defined, well tested, and production-ready.
  • Contributing to build-and-run responsibilities, including investigation of defects, production support, performance improvement, and technical debt reduction.
  • Producing and maintaining clear technical documentation where needed, including implementation notes, service behaviours, and support guidance.

For applicants with Lead Software Engineer experience, we would also expect evidence of the following:

  • Leading technical design for significant features or services within a squad.
  • Guiding engineering standards, code quality, and good delivery practices across the team.
  • Supporting and mentoring other engineers through pairing, review, coaching, and knowledge transfer.
  • Helping shape technical approaches that balance business value, maintainability, resilience, and delivery pace.
  • Working closely with the Tech Lead to reduce delivery risk, improve engineering maturity, and support better long-term platform outcomes.

Our Technology Environment

You’ll be working in a modern engineering environment built primarily around Microsoft Azure and contemporary web and service technologies. Typical technologies and patterns in use across our platforms include:

  • Frontend: React, Component-based web application development, Modern UI frameworks and state management approaches
  • Backend: Microsoft Azure, Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure and environment automation, Message-based and integration-led patterns where appropriate, Monitoring, operational support, and live service improvement
  • Engineering Practices: Agile delivery, Build-and-run ownership, Test-driven or test-first engineering approaches, Code review and collaborative design, Secure coding and quality engineering practices

What We’re Looking for

We’re looking for a strong engineer who can contribute effectively within an agile squad and is comfortable working in a modern Azure-based delivery environment. You should bring:

  • Commercial experience in software engineering within agile delivery teams.
  • Experience building and maintaining modern applications using Microsoft technologies.
  • Experience working with cloud-hosted services, ideally in Azure.
  • A good understanding of APIs, service-based applications, and modern software design practices.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, version control, and automated testing.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively with engineers, QA, product, and delivery colleagues.
  • A focus on code quality, maintainability, security, and continuous improvement.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical ideas clearly.

Additional expectations for Lead Software Engineer level

Applicants operating at Lead Software Engineer level would typically demonstrate:

  • Strong experience designing and delivering scalable, reliable software in production environments.
  • The ability to lead technical implementation within a squad without needing to be the formal people manager.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and raising engineering standards through review, coaching, and example.
  • Confidence making pragmatic technical decisions across architecture, delivery, quality, and operational support.
  • A track record of owning complex problems through discovery, implementation, release, and live support.

What Sets You Apart

  • You’re curious and always looking to improve.
  • You take ownership and follow through.
  • You enjoy solving problems and thinking critically.
  • You thrive in a team environment and value shared success.
  • You stay up to date with industry trends and emerging tech.

The rewards:

  • A negotiable basic salary and all the normal benefits you’d expect (Holiday, company pension etc.)
  • A collaborative, open and honest environment that is designed to deliver the best outcomes to our clients and staff
