Job Purpose: Promote the mission statement and values of Bricket Wood providing safe, sound, and supportive care and support. To work with the people that you are paid to support to enable them to lead as independent and fulfilling lives as possible. This job description lists the main areas in which you will be expected to provide support. We may need to add more specific tasks to this based on the needs and wishes of the people. This supports their right to have control over their own lives.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Follow the individual support plans and risk assessments and ensure that changes to individual needs are escalated to the team leader/manager.
- Support the person(s) to live the life they want to lead, make decisions, have as many choices about their lives as possible and be supported to take appropriate risks.
- Make each day the best it can possibly be.
- Support people to maintain their existing skills and develop new ones.
- Access facilities in the local community and take part in activities outside of their home. This may include appointments, religious and cultural activities, and work and leisure activities.
- Support people with cooking, shopping, and ensuring a clean home according to individual choices.
- Support people to make informed decisions about their health and administer prescribed medication.
- Support with personal care (e.g. washing, bathing, shaving, going to the toilet) when required.
- Support people to achieve their ambitions as set out in their support plans.
- Assist with the management of finances.
- Take an active involvement in support plans and ensure these reflect the people we support.
- Act as key worker for people ensuring that their experiences and quality of life are regularly reviewed.
- Undertake monthly support worker meetings.
- Participate in daily handovers ensuring that you contribute key information related to the people we support.
- Ensure that accidents, incidents and near miss events are recorded and escalated to the team leader/manager.
- Carry out any additional tasks or duties according to your support worker responsibilities and within your scope of competence.
You Will Be Expected To
- Make safeguarding an absolute priority. Ensure that you report concerns, poor practice, or suspected abuse always.
- Act as an ambassador for the service ensuring as a support worker you maintain professionalism and integrity at all times.
- Refrain from befriending service users on social network sites.
- Treat the person(s) that you are paid to support with dignity and respect at all times.
- Always act in the best interest of any person who may lack capacity.
- Be aware of, and follow the procedure for, reporting any safeguarding concerns or incidents.
- Keep accurate records.
- Attend training and ensure all mandatory training is up to date.
- Attend team meetings as required.
- Attend daily handovers ensuring that key information is always communicated to your colleagues.
- Co-operate and attend a yearly approval and supervisions.
- Ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the people you support and your colleagues.
- Embrace team working by ensuring effective and open communication for the benefit of the people we support.
- Drive car/people carrier if you are qualified to do so.
- Undertake any other appropriate duties as required by the person(s) that you are paid to support or management and that are appropriate to your grade.
- Perform all duties in accordance with the organisation’s policies and procedures.
- Be flexible to ensure that people are supported in a wide range of activities including bank holidays, weekends, and evenings.
- Maintain the confidentiality of the people we support at all times.
- Participate in night shifts as required.
Qualifications
- Essential: QCF/NVQ CF L2 in Health & Social Care Services or equivalent qualification or evidence of working towards.
- Evidence of completion of Care certificate or confirms willingness to do so.
- Train the trainer qualification.
- Safeguarding Adults Level 2 or above.
Experience
- Essential: Previous role as support worker for Learning Disability/Autism service.
- Proven experience in supporting people with Learning Disabilities/Autism.
- Proven experience in caring for vulnerable adults and/or children.
Knowledge & Skills
- Essential: Understanding of dignity and respect.
- Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults.
- Positive Behaviour Support.
- Working knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act, DOLS, Safeguarding, and other relevant legislation.
- Demonstrable English written and verbal skills.
- Good IT skills, able to use all basic programmes – outlook, word and handheld monitors for digital care planning and records.
- Clear, polite telephone manner.
- Ability to work as a team member and autonomously.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Ability to follow organisation and local policy and procedure.
- Has a friendly disposition and a desire to support people to lead independent and fulfilling lives.
