About The Role

Job Purpose: The Compliance & Reliability Engineer ensures the reliability, efficiency, and continuous improvement of production equipment within the Brewing department and wider facilities infrastructure across the Brewdog sites in Ellon. This position is responsible for developing and implementing robust maintenance strategies, optimising asset performance, and ensuring compliance with statutory and quality regulations.

The role focuses on driving proactive maintenance practices, overhauls, analysing failure modes and implementing value-added maintenance routines to meet legislation, HSEQ policies, minimise downtime and enhance operational efficiency.

Key Result Area / Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Compliance with Legislation & HSEQ: Ensure all maintenance activities meet relevant legislation including but not limited to ATEX, DSEAR, PUWER, LOLER, PSSR, other aligned regulation, industry standards and site HSEQ policies. Ensure completion of risk assessments, implementation of safety measures, and support audits to maintain safety, quality, and legal compliance.
  • Ensure all reliability initiatives and maintenance practices adhere to relevant food safety regulations and internal quality standards. Develop and implement reliability strategies that minimise the risk of contamination (physical, chemical, biological) including the appropriate use of tools, food-grade lubricants, product contact materials, and components in all maintenance and improvement projects.
  • Failure Analysis: Lead or participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for recurring equipment failures. Conduct analysis for new and existing equipment, identifying failure modes and implementing strategies to prevent or minimise their impact when they occur. Utilise data analysis and engineering principles to diagnose complex issues. Analyse maintenance reports, spare parts usage, performance data to optimise routines that improve efficiency, reduce downtime and cost.
  • Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive reliability improvement programs focused on maximizing OEE and throughput. Design and execute reliability tests to evaluate performance and predict component lifespan under typical operating conditions. Optimize preventive maintenance (PM) schedules to align with production cycles, minimising disruption whilst ensuring compliance.
  • Collaborate with maintenance, operations, and engineering teams to integrate reliability best practices into daily operations and new equipment designs, considering hygienic design principles from the outset.
  • Overhauls: Monitor equipment performance to ensure overhauls are carried out at optimum frequencies to obtain minimal production disruption and cost.
  • Maintenance Optimisation: Analyse maintenance reports, spare parts usage, performance data to optimise the strategy and routines to improve efficiency, reduce downtime and cost.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive initiatives to enhance production efficiency across your nominated processes, which can include implementation of Lean Manufacturing and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) practices.
  • Technical Support & Training: Provide technical guidance and assist in identifying training for maintenance staff. Stand in for Engineering & Maintenance Manager if required.

  • Ensure that Health and Safety guidelines and fire regulations are strictly adhered to at all times.

  • Complete online or face to face training as and when required.
  • Take reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by acts or omissions at work.
  • Report any accidents, incidents or near misses as soon as reasonably practicable.

General:

  • Be aware of and adhere to BrewDog policies and the Workplace Code at all times.
  • Take part in crew reviews throughout the year.
  • Cooperate with other BrewDog departments to achieve a great experience for our customers, applicants, colleagues, and contractors.
  • Attend training courses and complete online training modules as required to meet the requirements of the role.
  • Take responsibility for own personal development, seeking out opportunities to learn new skills.
  • Undertake any other duties as requested which are reasonably deemed to be within the scope of the role or necessary for the smooth running of the business.
  • Apply the BrewDog charter and behaviours to every aspect of the role at all times.
  • Protect and enhance the interests and reputation of BrewDog internally and externally.

About You

QUALIFICATIONS & SPECIFIC TRAINING: SVQ Level 3 in Engineering or equivalent qualification. Professional certifications in maintenance management, health and safety, or food safety (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) are advantageous. Relevant certifications in electrical, mechanical, or automation disciplines would be beneficial.

EXPERIENCE: Proven experience in maintenance engineering, preferably within the food and beverage or FMCG industry. Experience in developing and implementing Predictive and Preventive Maintenance (PPM) strategies. Hands‑on experience in planning and executing equipment overhauls and major repairs. Experience in Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for equipment failures. Proven track record in applying Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Lean Manufacturing principles to improve maintenance operations. Familiarity with managing spare parts inventory and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS). Experience of delivering practical and pragmatic compliance to legal frameworks within a regulated manufacturing industry.

KNOWLEDGE: Strong understanding of compliance requirements within manufacturing industries, and maintenance methodologies which may include Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM), Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM), etc. Knowledge of HSEQ policies and regulations. Sound understanding of industrial equipment failure modes and associated risk management strategies. Familiarity with automation and control systems used in manufacturing and food processing. Knowledge of industry standards and best practices related to equipment reliability and performance optimisation.

Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly in the context of failure analysis and troubleshooting. Proficiency in data analysis tools to monitor performance, identify trends, and optimise maintenance activities. Advanced skills in interpreting and creating and managing detailed maintenance schedules, work instructions, and technical documentation. Effective communication skills to collaborate across teams, train staff, and present technical information clearly to stakeholders. Proficiency in using CMMS software to create, mend and schedule routines and report on maintenance activities.
