DEPARTMENTAL OVERVIEW: The Tax team is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the firm's tax affairs, including tax compliance, reporting, planning, and advisory work across the fund structures and investment activities. The successful candidate will assist with a variety of projects relating to both the global corporate group and the external funds managed by Brevan Howard, including BH Digital. Given the global nature of the business, the team works closely with colleagues and advisors spread across various jurisdictions. The individual will join this team, working alongside experienced tax professionals to help manage and develop the firm's tax function on a global scale.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Advise on non-US tax matters affecting the Brevan Howard group’s managed funds and management entities. The role reports to the Global Head of Tax and works closely with tax colleagues in the UK, the US and the UAE.
- Lead the non-US tax analysis of fund investment transactions, with a particular focus on credit, digital asset and venture investments, including:
- a) Assessing potential withholding taxes, non-resident capital gains taxes, corporate taxes and related local registration and filing obligations;
- b) Advising on appropriate holding structures;
- c) Reviewing tax provisions in transaction documents, including tax representations, gross-up provisions, withholding provisions and indemnities;
- d) Working directly with investment teams and external advisers to provide clear, practical conclusions in a timely manner.
- Advise on new business initiatives, including new investment strategies and fund launches. Provide tax advice on the establishment of new operating entities, covering both direct and indirect tax matters.
- Support on fund and investor-related tax matters by working closely with internal teams and external service providers.
- As part of the wider tax team, provide advice in respect of tax matters impacting Brevan Howard management entities and their employees.
- Monitor relevant non-US tax legislative and regulatory developments. Assess their implications for the managed funds and management entities and advise senior stakeholders accordingly.
- Support the development of junior members of the tax team.
WORK EXPERIENCE/ BACKGROUND
Essential:
- 6+ years of relevant tax experience gained in a Big 4 firm, a law firm or in-house within asset management or financial services.
- Proven experience advising on cross-border investment tax issues affecting funds, including withholding tax, treaty access and permanent establishment analysis.
- Experience of the tax aspects of credit, digital asset or venture investments.
- Experience of the tax issues that impact multinational asset management businesses and their managed funds.
- Experience of working to transaction timetables alongside investment teams and external advisers.
Desirable:
- In-house asset management / hedge fund experience.
- Experience of supervising or developing junior tax professionals.
TECHNICAL/BUSINESS SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE
Essential:
- Professional accounting or tax qualification, or a qualified lawyer.
- Strong technical knowledge of corporate and partnership tax and of international tax principles, including double tax treaties, withholding taxes and permanent establishment risk.
- Ability to reach and communicate practical conclusions on complex, technical issues, concisely and to deadline, to non-tax stakeholders.
Desirable:
- Working knowledge of the tax treatment of digital assets and tokenised instruments.
- Sufficient knowledge of US tax principles to work effectively with US tax colleagues.
