Brentwood Borough Council is looking for a committed and knowledgeable Arboricultural Officer to help manage, enhance, and protect the borough’s diverse tree stock across parks, open spaces, woodlands, housing assets, and conservation sites.

As our Arboricultural Officer, you will:

  • Carry out detailed tree inspections using VTI, QTRA, PTI and other recognised methodologies.
  • Manage and update the Council’s digital Tree Management System, including surveying, mapping and programming risk-based works.
  • Provide professional advice on tree management, TPOs, Conservation Area notifications, and planning applications.
  • Produce reports, assess risks, and create work programmes for trees across parks, open spaces, car parks and housing sites.
  • Manage and monitor external contractors, ensuring compliance with RAMS, insurance and quality standards.
  • Support enforcement of arboricultural conditions, high hedge legislation, and root damage investigations.
  • Assist with woodland management and delivery of grant-funded environmental projects.
  • Engage with residents, stakeholders and councillors, attending site meetings and responding to enquiries.

You will bring:

  • Strong experience in arboriculture, including tree surveying, TPO regulations and BS3998.
  • Proven experience working with contractors and managing work programmes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications and tree management software.
  • Excellent communication, diplomacy and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Diagnostic skills in tree health, pests and diseases.

Essential qualifications include:

  • Lantra VTI (or equivalent).
  • RFS Diploma in Arboriculture (or equivalent).
  • Full driving licence and access to own vehicle.
  • Lantra PTI – or willingness to work towards.
  • QTRA – or willingness to work towards.
  • IOSH Managing Safely – or willingness to work towards.
