The Role of the Sustainability Senior Executive
The Sustainability Senior Executive is a new role. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving forward the club’s environmental sustainability strategy. They will work with the Head of Sustainability and Community and other colleagues from around the club to deliver the strategy.
The current sustainability strategy is in its final year and in the coming season the club will develop the next version of the strategy, which the successful candidate will contribute to.

Our approach to sustainability is built around the following five elements:
Governance : to ensure that we\’re living up to our sustainability mission, we monitor and report on our progress regularly
Climate : we\’re committed to reducing our carbon footprint and to supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation
Circularity : we\’re committed to promoting circular economy practices throughout our club and managing resources sustainably
Nature : we support the regeneration of natural habitats and a healthy living environment
Engagement : we\’re committed to collaborating with our colleagues, players, stakeholders, fans, and the local community
Main Accountabilities

  • Data management: manage sustainability-related KPIs and data, including data collection, calculations and dashboarding
  • Advisory board: help to organise the sustainability advisory board liaising with sustainability experts to develop meeting agendas, share relevant materials and taking subsequent actions
  • Staff working group: support the organisation of the staff working group and liaise with club staff generally to drive the roll out of the sustainability strategy across departments
  • Budgeting: help to refine and manage the sustainability budget
  • Climate: support the implementation of the decarbonisation plan, including managing projects for emissions reductions, tracking process against the data and working with departments to implement change
  • Circularity: drive up recycling rates in the stadium, minimise single use products across the club and identify further opportunities for circularity
  • Nature: support the implementation of the nature strategy and increasing the club’s biodiversity score, support the club’s community volunteers and develop the nature stakeholders working group
  • Engagement: drive the writing and development of the club’s annual sustainability report, including liaising with content, marketing and business communications teams on publishing our sustainability work and supporting staff with sustainability training and learning as required
  • Industry collaboration – work with counterparts from other clubs and across the sports industry to share best practice and work towards industry-wide outcomes, staying up to date on industry and regulatory developments

Person Specification – Essential Characteristics

  • Be diligent, driven and passionate about sustainability
  • Have demonstrable experience in a similar role, specifically in developing and implementing climate action plans with good knowledge of all aspects of sustainability
  • Have an understanding of the environmental sustainability challenges specific to the sport industry or other related sectors
  • Have the ability to influence. The success of this role relies on an ability to evolve the way the club works which will require widespread buy-in
  • Be familiar with existing and upcoming sustainability frameworks, environmental regulations and reporting requirement, including the GHG protocol and SBTi
  • Have strong project management skills and be organised, budget-conscious and determined to hit deadlines
  • Be a team player – this is critical for us. The club comes first, and there is a requirement to work hard, with enthusiasm, alongside your colleagues
  • Be personable, adaptable and a persuasive communicator
