This is an exciting time to join Breathe. Having proven the value of our products in both the automotive and consumer electronics spaces, we are scaling our Cell Chemistry team. You will bring in knowledge on the manufacturing process and working mechanisms of commercial lithium‑ion cells and strengthen the team’s theoretical understanding and practical experience in chemical and electrochemical analysis on lithium‑ion cells and its components. You will also design experiments on lithium‑ion cells that produce actionable feedback for product development.

Your day to day:

  • Analyse data from electrochemical and materials characterisations on samples from lithium‑ion batteries to extract information for model parametrisation.
  • Lead the post‑mortem analysis activities, focusing on cell degradation forensics, to generate actionable feedback to product development.
  • Lead or participate in development projects as the subject specialist in cell chemistry.
  • Conduct chemical and electrochemical experiments in a glovebox and a fume hood.
  • Improve experimental procedures for efficiency and robustness of model parameterisation.
  • Support the operation and maintenance tasks in Cell Chemistry Team, including experiments and data analysis.

Your background:

  • A degree in chemistry, engineering, or a relevant subject.
  • More than two years' experience with cell design and/or manufacturing of lithium‑ion batteries in the industry.
  • Knowledge of cell chemistry, working and degradation mechanisms of lithium‑ion batteries.
  • Experience with electrochemical methods and materials characterisation for lithium‑ion cells and its components.
  • Ability to create and implement chemistry safety procedures including CoSHH and risk assessments.
  • Basic programming, preferably in MATLAB and/or Python.
  • Experience with handling compressed gas is a plus but not essential.
  • Enjoy teaching and learning practical skills and working in a laboratory environment.
  • Ability to work cross functionally in a kind and conscientious manner.
