We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Contractor - Systems Engineer to join our team designing and developing high-integrity systems. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the whole systems engineering lifecycle and work in a multidisciplinary team to design a variety of complex systems. Projects will be of varying levels of size and complexity and both internal and external projects. The successful candidate will be able to apply both MBSE and traditional document based approaches to design definition according to the requirements of the project, applying industry best practice to analyse and validate the proposed architecture(s).

Key Responsibilities

  • Liaise with stakeholders to enable the elicitation of architectural requirements.
  • Analyse and define system features and attributes to inform the creation of the most appropriate system architecture.
  • Conduct appropriate analysis (use cases, sequence diagrams, simulations, state machines etc.) for defining system behaviour and application to the system architecture.
  • Define Logical architectures to support the definition and allocation of feature/functions.
  • Analyse and define physical architecture and interfaces.
  • Support the system level fault response and reconfiguration activities.
  • Support reliability and safety analysis (e.g. ITD, FMEA, FTA, HARA etc.).
  • Use requirements management tools for capturing requirements at all levels and generating specification documents.
  • Mentor system engineers in the application of the defined system architecture.
  • Ensure that the system architecture effectively supports integration and test activities.
  • Ensure project documentation is correctly managed, maintained and released in line with company processes and standards.
  • Deliver engineering tasks in line with project milestones.
  • Support the governance of requirements management processes, toolchain, and model ontology.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills Required

  • A degree or similar qualification in an engineering discipline.
  • A sound understanding of engineering, physics and applied mathematics and their application to solving real world problems.
  • Excellent problem‑solving and analytical skills.
  • Able to prioritise and manage projects and tasks effectively.
  • Relevant experience in system design, electrical/electronic engineering and control systems.
  • Experience in a customer‑facing role, providing technical interfaces to customers.
  • Strong presentation, report writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to liaise effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience in engineering of vehicle electrification, power systems and/or renewable energy.

Preferred

  • A degree in Systems Engineering or a degree with Systems Engineering content.
  • Experience in battery management system (BMS) design and implementation.
  • Familiarity with process frameworks e.g. automotive SPICE and systems engineering processes.
  • Experience of variant management, change control and/or a feature‑based approach to system design and implementation.
  • Experience in verification and validation and/or design implementation.
  • Experience of Business Management Systems including ISO 9001.
  • Familiar with delivering projects to APQP requirements or a similar quality‑driven system.

System or Knowledge

  • Deep understanding of system architecture principles and design patterns.
  • Proficiency in systems engineering methodologies, including requirements management, risk analysis, and validation/verification.
  • Experience with relevant tools and technologies, such as SysML, UML, and architecture modelling software.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements for high-integrity systems (e.g., ISO 26262, DO‑178C, IEC 61508).
  • Robustness analysis such as FMEA using an appropriate industry standard.

Location and Travel

  • You must be eligible to work in the UK and have no restrictions for world‑wide travel.
  • This role is based in the UK with hybrid working arrangements.
  • Working hours are 09h00 to 17h00, 5 days a week, however frequent travel is expected, and flexible working patterns are essential to the role.
