The Quality Engineer will support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of quality systems and product assurance activities within a fast‑growing engineering consultancy specialising in battery systems, charging systems, and electrification technologies for the marine, industrial, automotive, and defence sectors. The role is responsible for ensuring quality standards are maintained across engineering, prototype development, low‑to‑medium volume manufacturing, testing, and supplier activities. This includes supporting the manufacture of battery packs ranging from 60V to 800V using cylindrical and pouch cell technologies, along with charging systems for applications ranging from motorcycles through to large marine vessels. Working closely with engineering, manufacturing, operations, and supply chain teams, the Quality Engineer will help establish robust quality processes, support product compliance, drive continuous improvement, and ensure customer and regulatory requirements are achieved within a dynamic start‑up environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Quality Assurance & Quality Control
    • Support implementation and maintenance of company quality management systems and procedures.
    • Develop and maintain quality documentation including inspection plans, quality procedures, work instructions, and quality records.
    • Conduct inspection and verification activities for prototype and production assemblies.
    • Support incoming inspection, in‑process inspection, and final product verification activities.
    • Ensure robust traceability and documentation controls are maintained for battery systems and associated products.
  • Manufacturing & Production Quality Support
    • Support manufacturing teams to ensure products are built in accordance with engineering specifications and quality standards.
    • Assist with development and improvement of manufacturing quality controls and inspection processes.
    • Support quality activities during prototype builds, pilot production, and low‑volume production manufacturing.
    • Participate in production readiness and process validation activities.
    • Monitor manufacturing quality performance and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement
    • Investigate product, process, and supplier quality issues using structured root cause analysis techniques.
    • Support corrective and preventive action (CAPA) activities.
    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing defects, improving reliability, and enhancing process capability.
    • Analyse quality data and KPI trends to identify recurring issues and improvement priorities.
    • Support lessons learned and process improvement activities across engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Supplier Quality Support
    • Support supplier quality activities including supplier evaluations, incoming quality concerns, and supplier corrective actions.
    • Assist with supplier audits and supplier performance monitoring where required.
    • Work collaboratively with purchasing and engineering teams to resolve supplier‑related quality issues.
  • Engineering & Product Development Support
    • Participate in design reviews and manufacturing reviews to support Design for Quality (DFQ) and Design for Manufacture (DFM) activities.
    • Support development of quality standards for battery packs, charging systems, and electronic assemblies.
    • Assist with configuration control and engineering change management processes.
    • Support testing, validation, and product compliance activities.
  • Compliance & Regulatory Support
    • Support compliance with applicable standards, regulations, and customer requirements.
    • Assist with activities relating to ISO9001 or IATF16949 readiness, Quality Assurance Engineering Schemes (QAES) (Marine requirements), and JSP 940 - Ministry of Defence Policy for Quality, CE/UKCA.
    • Support internal audits, process audits, and external audit preparation activities.
    • Promote safe working practices relating to lithium‑ion batteries and high‑voltage systems.
  • Documentation & Reporting
    • Maintain accurate quality records, inspection reports, and non‑conformance documentation.
    • Support preparation of customer quality reports and project documentation.
    • Assist with development of quality metrics and operational reporting systems.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills Required

  • Degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent qualification in Quality Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in quality engineering, manufacturing quality, or product assurance roles.
  • Experience working within engineering or manufacturing environments involving electro‑mechanical or electrical systems.
  • Good understanding of quality management systems and quality assurance methodologies.
  • Experience conducting inspections, root cause analysis, and corrective action activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical problem‑solving capability.
  • Good communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and quality reporting tools.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills Preferred

  • Experience within electrification, automotive, marine, aerospace, defence, or industrial sectors.
  • Familiarity with lithium‑ion battery systems and high‑voltage products.
  • Experience supporting ISO9001 or IATF16949 quality systems, Quality Assurance Engineering Schemes (QAES) and JSP 940 - Ministry of Defence Policy for Quality.
  • Knowledge of APQP, PPAP, PFMEA, control plans, and 8D methodologies.
  • Experience within low‑volume/high‑mix manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with electronics manufacturing and PCB assembly quality processes.
  • Experience supporting prototype and new product introduction (NPI) activities.
  • Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma training beneficial.
  • Experience within start‑up or rapidly growing engineering businesses.

Location and Travel

  • You must be eligible to work in the UK and have no restrictions for world‑wide travel. We are unable to offer Visa sponsorship.
  • This role is based at our Head Office in the UK, with flexibility for remote working up to 2 days a week.
  • Working hours are 09:00 to 17:00, 5 days a week, however some travel is expected, and flexible working patterns are essential to the role.
