About us: A family run company, Magnetic Shields Limited (MSL) is the industry leader in the design and manufacture of magnetically shielded products and rooms. Our brand new factory unit and fibre cutting laser with full stock automation more than doubles our production capacity and throughput. This period of expansion is a very exciting time for the company and we are looking to speak to applicants interested in joining us our R&D team as a Graduate Physicist. This is an ideal role for a recent graduate who wants to develop their career within a small team in a growing department lead by a forward-looking research and development manager.
About the role:
- Design, simulation and testing of magnetic shielding for a wide range of applications from quantum technologies to space vehicles.
- Magnetic qualification (QC) of final products to ensure adherence to technical specifications and in writing technical reports for customers.
- Once familiar with magnetic testing processes, the successful candidate will oversee junior members of staff on testing responsibilities.
- Communicating with customers to provide technical support, which can additionally involve site visits to commission, calibrate and troubleshoot some of the larger products.
- Perform critical feasibility and fundamental design capture on collaborative multi-party research and development projects for a range of applications from space to quantum, from automotive to aerospace, from big science to semiconductor fabs.
- Setting up lab experiments to conduct magnetic measurements.
- Conducting data analysis of magnetic measurements.
- Conducting off-site magnetic surveys to assess environment viability.
- Writing detailed and accurate technical reports on measurements and analysis.
- Writing and using software to enable efficient in lab experiments.
- Conducting magnetic shielding simulations using ANSYS and Maxwell 3D.
- Representing the Company in external environments as appropriate.
Qualifications:
- Master’s or bachelor’s degree in Physics (2:1 or above).
- Good programming skills/experience in at least one programming language such as Python, C++, R etc.
- Confidence in laboratory work and processing experimental data.
- Good technical documentation skills.
- Interest in writing technical documentation.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Keen attention to detail, enthusiastic and highly self motivated.
- Experience in the fields of electromagnetism and solid state physics.
- Experience in the testing and qualification of electronic circuits.
- Experience in the field of quantum technologies, ideally sensing.
- Experience with EM modelling software (i.e. ANSYS, COMSOL Multiphysics, Opera, etc.).
- Knowledge of instrument automation and data acquisition.
- Experience with LabVIEW programming software.
