We have an exciting opportunity for a full-time or job share Practice Nurse to join our friendly and supportive team at Brannam Medical Centre. This role is ideal for a nurse who is newly qualified and passionate about delivering high-quality patient care and supporting routine clinics with immunisations and vaccinations, wound care and dressings, NHS health checks and health promotion and patient education.
Main duties of the job
- Provide nursing care independently and as part of the wider team, in line with protocols.
- Duties include but are not limited to:
- Chronic disease reviews (e.g. asthma, diabetes, hypertension, CHD)
- Health checks, wound care, ECGs, venepuncture, ear care, Doppler
- Vaccinations (e.g. childhood, flu, travel, as per PGD or PSD)
- Health promotion and lifestyle advice

Job responsibilities
- Providing assessment, screening, treatment services and health education advice.
- Assist in the provision of nursing services for the practice to include the delegation of duties to other practice nursing staff as appropriate.
- Assist the nursing needs of patients and provide appropriate care-treatment in conjunction with team members, the GP or independently, as appropriate and in accordance with practice policy and protocols.
- Undertake general nursing care of the patients within the surgery to include:
- Administration of wound care assessment and planning management in conjunction with patient.
- Ear examination and irrigation.
- Venepuncture, if Phlebotomist not available.
- Recording of ECGs.
Supplies and equipment Treatment room and other areas:
- Ability to monitor and manage maintenance of stock and equipment to include refrigeration and emergency equipment.
Pathological specimens and investigation procedures:
- Undertake the collection of pathological specimens including intravenous blood samples, swabs, smears, etc.
Administration & professional responsibilities
- Participate in the administration and professional responsibilities of the Practice team.
- Ensure accurate documentation of all consultations and treatments in the patient medical record using SystmOne.
- Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care and registration with the Practice.
- Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports.
- Attend and participate in Practice meetings as required.
- Assist in the formulation of Practice philosophy, strategy and policy.
- Generate prescriptions where appropriate and according to protocol.
- Ensure computer system is operational at the beginning of each day and closed down at the end of the day.
- A willingness to develop and expand core knowledge on all aspects of IT through both in-house and external training.
- Receive and make telephone calls as required. Take messages as appropriate.
- Ensure total familiarity with appointment system in place.
- Monitor effectiveness of the system and report any problems or variations to the Practice Manager.
- Assist patients who require information about the in-house complaints procedure.
Research projects:
- Co-operate and participate as required in any research projects within the practice as identified.
- Maintain continued education by attendance at courses and study days, in house training events, self-directed learning and research, as deemed useful or necessary for professional development and revalidation.
- Participation in an annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development.
- Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar.
