This is a new role being introduced into our dedicated nursing team. We are seeking a trained and experienced Phlebotomist to join our friendly practice. You will support the delivery of high quality primary care by providing safe, accurate, and compassionate venepuncture services to our diverse semi-rural patient population.
The position offers between 15 hours minimum up to 30 hours per week working between the hours of 8.30am-6.30pm. There is a requirement to work Mondays am and pm and Fridays am, with other days open to negotiation. There will also be a requirement to cover some Saturday mornings on a team rota basis.
Main duties of the job- Working under the direct supervision of the Lead practice nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols.
- Blood Sample Collection: Perform venepuncture to collect blood samples from patients following clinical guidelines.
- Patient Care & Comfort: Ensure patients feel at ease, addressing any concerns and managing anxious individuals professionally.
- Sample Processing: Label, store, and prepare blood samples for transportation to the laboratory, ensuring accuracy and compliance with protocols.
- Infection Control & Safety: Follow infection prevention procedures, including proper disposal of sharps and maintaining a clean working environment.
- Record Keeping: Accurately document patient details, tests requested, and sample collection in the clinical system.
- Stock Management: Maintain and replenish phlebotomy and clinical room supplies, ensuring all necessary equipment is available.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with GPs, nurses, and administrative staff to support patient care and practice efficiency.
- Professional Development: Stay updated with best practices and attend training as required.
About us: We are a patient-focused semi-rural training and dispensing practice serving around 16,700 patients with two sites in Brampton, and one in Corby Hill and Wetheral.
Job responsibilities- The core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist are as follows. On occasion, there may be a requirement to carry out tasks not listed below, that are within the reasonable scope of the role.
- Obtain patients' consent for the collection of a blood sample.
- Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols.
- Maintaining accurate patient records.
- Correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples.
- Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies.
- Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner.
- Maintaining an effective liaison with laboratory staff.
- Clinical room stocking as part of daily duties.
- Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient-related matters.
In addition to the core responsibilities, the Phlebotomist may be requested to:
- Partake in audit as directed by the audit lead.
- Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care.
- Support and participate in shared learning throughout the organisation.
- Experience: Experience in a GP Practice/Hospital.
- Qualifications: Qualified in Phlebotomy Care Certificate.
- Disclosure and Barring Service Check: This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
