MAIN PURPOSE
To improve the lives of people with acquired brain injury by minimising the impact of their condition through effective clinical leadership to promote recovery and wellbeing for all service users. To assist the Ward Manager in leading, co‑ordinating, and supervising a dedicated team to ensure the delivery of a high standard of nursing care. To manage the direct patient care whilst modelling appropriate clinical behaviours to other staff. To promote and monitor safe and effective practice. To enhance the service user experience. To contribute to the delivery of the organisation’s objectives.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To provide clinical leadership on a daily basis ensuring that exceptional standards of care are adhered to at all times, by acting as a positive role model and ensuring that best practice guidelines are followed.
  • Assisting in the effective assessment, admission, and discharge planning with service user’s care team.
  • Establish systems and processes to ensure effective communication and continuity of service user care consulting with inter-disciplinary teams.
  • Empower and enable staff to contribute to the delivery of high‑quality person‑centred care.
  • Promote and facilitate a learning culture within the ward and a culture of reflective practice for all staff.
  • Establish highest care standards to meet or exceed current standards as well as ensuring that risk management strategies are in place.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all staff recognise the potential for or signs of service user harm, abuse, and neglect, including poor clinical practice, report all such occurrences and take all responsible steps to protect the service user.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all staff identify, and report concerns regarding safeguarding of all those who may be at risk.
  • Involvement in staff recruitment and retention.
  • Support the induction of fresh staff and take on the role of mentor (where applicable) for students and newly qualified staff.
  • Promote the health and wellbeing of staff and note any signs of ill health or stress factors and take appropriate action in line with Brainkind policies.
  • Promote effective confidential communication with service users, relatives, families, carers, and colleagues (including external personnel) providing information and support to in decision‑making and advocate on the service users' behalf.
  • Adhere to organisational and NMC guidelines for practice requirements and standards such as the safe handling, administration, storage of all medication.
  • To establish and maintain a high profile with service users, carers, and all staff.
  • To ensure that appropriate risk assessments are undertaken and that agreed action plans have been implemented.
  • Maintain effective records management ensuring all documentation written or electronic is managed as per Brainkind and current NMC guidelines.
  • Assist with audit processes within the ward and ensure that outcomes of audits are addressed.
  • Ensure assessments of Infection risk are in place and all actions highlighted are addressed.
  • Ensure safe and effective management of all equipment used on the ward.
  • Ensure all near misses, incidents and faulty equipment are recorded, reported, and investigated and appropriate actions implemented.
  • Ensure risk management arrangements are in place within the ward and that staff have the knowledge and skills to work within these requirements.
  • Work with other wards to ensure an efficient care pathway and better ways of working within the ward to enhance service user care and service delivery.
  • As required, manage direct care to service users including those with complex needs modelling appropriate clinical behaviours to other staff.
  • Assist in the investigation responding to service user complaints in an effective and timely manner as per Brainkind Policy.
  • To ensure up to date knowledge of all relevant legislation.
  • To undertake any other duties as may from time to time be specified by the Service Manager/Brainkind, that is within the level and responsibility appropriate to the grade of post.
  • To provide on call support to the service.

ABOUT YOU

  • Are you an RMN/RNLD with an active PIN?
  • Two years’ experience of working as a Staff Nurse within a Neurobehavioral setting.
  • The ability to effectively prioritise the work of self and others.
  • Experience of managing a team.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the Mental Capacity Act.
  • Knowledge of NMC standards.
  • Experience of conducting capacity assessments and leading on best interested decision‑making.
  • Demonstrate implementation of the Mental Health Act as a nurse of the prescribed class.
  • Experience of involvement with CQC inspections.
  • Experience of consulting with external professionals to improve service user experience.
  • Understanding and experience of implementing HR policies and procedures.
