Occupational Therapy Assistant
Salary: £24,937 per annum
Hours: 35 hrs per week, Monday to Friday - 8am - 4pm
Brainkind is a charity that aims to improve the lives of people with brain injuries in the UK. Our assessment centres, rehabilitation units and hospitals use expert neurorehabilitation to support people to regain the skills they have lost. We treat people with a range of brain injuries – sustained through trauma, illness, substance abuse and more – to recover and meet their personal goals. This opportunity is based in Fen House, Ely which provides rehabilitation to up to 25 individuals with an acquired brain injury. It is a unique community where the people we support can address their cognitive, behavioural, physical, and emotional difficulties.
You will work alongside occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists and speech and language therapists who work collaboratively with support workers to enable individuals to achieve their goals, such as regaining the ability to walk, talk or re‑learn daily skills.
MAIN PURPOSE: To work as part of a multi/interdisciplinary team to support the rehabilitation of people we support with acquired brain injury, working on specific therapy programmes devised and supervised by the clinical team.
MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To work with people we support as guided by the registered therapist(s) across all disciplines i.e. occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, in order to meet outcomes/goals.
- To enable, guide and support our people we support with acquired brain injuries in the performance of daily living skills and impairment level therapy activities on the unit, in their own homes and in the community.
- To assist the people we support to practice, reinforce and generalise specific skills and behaviours. The range may include but is not limited to the following: kitchen skills, personal care, indoor and outdoor mobility, transfers, cognitive re‑training, upper limb exercises, speech and language exercises, safe swallowing and social communication practice.
- Working with a physiotherapist, your work could involve:
- Setting up equipment
- Showing patients how to use mobility aids
- Helping patients prepare for treatment (including helping with dressing and undressing)
- Physically supporting persons to be able to stand, step and walk
- Working on exercises with patients
- Writing reports and updating patients’ records
Leadership
- To act where performance and practice of self and others should be recognised, reported or improved.
- To support and challenge others to maintain health, safety and security at work, report actual or potential problems and suggest solutions.
- To promote the organisation and use and develop partnerships across organisation and agency boundaries.
- To contribute to Brainkind’s clinical governance arrangements and quality agenda.
Evidence, Research and Development
- To implement clinical guidelines issued by the clinical governing bodies with guidance from qualified therapists.
- With support from a qualified therapist, to have an awareness of the evidence base and rationale for interventions used in rehabilitation programmes on the unit.
Facilitation of Learning
- To support a culture where everyone is encouraged to learn from their mistakes through giving and receiving constructive feedback.
- To participate in the training and induction of other staff.
- To support the clinical team in the education of students on placement and contribute to their assessments.
ABOUT YOU
- Educated to GCSE level or QCF Level II or equivalent in recognised health and social care qualifications.
- A good understanding of the different clinical roles within the multidisciplinary team.
- Previous experience of working within a rehabilitation setting or equivalent spheres of operation.
- Demonstrate relevant experience and understanding of the challenges associated with working with people with an acquired brain injury and associated cognitive and psychological difficulties.
- IT skills including the ability to open and send emails using Outlook, the ability to use Microsoft office and the ability to navigate the internet.
- An understanding and commitment to ED&I and an alignment to Brainkind values.
- Full Driving licence and willingness to drive people we support in unit vehicles.
