About the Role
Brainbox Ltd is an innovative neuroscience solutions provider working at the unique intersection of software, electronics, mechanics, and neuroscience. We are looking for a capable and motivated Graduate Mechatronics Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team for a summer placement, with a clear opportunity to progress into a permanent, full‑time role. This is an exciting, hands‑on role suited to a graduate or final‑year student who enjoys solving real‑world technical problems to deliver integrated solutions across a diverse range of hardware.
Key Responsibilities
- Mechanical Design: Using SolidWorks for product development, including the design and improvement of fixtures, housings, brackets, and functional assemblies for various neurotechnology platforms.
- Rapid Prototyping: Utilising 3D printing and iterative design methods to validate concepts and develop bespoke hardware solutions for research applications.
- Software Support: Assisting with the development and maintenance of internal and customer‑facing software tools using C#, Python, and C++ to enhance system functionality.
- System Integration: Supporting the assembly and integration of complex hardware systems, ensuring seamless interaction between electronics, software, and mechanical components to provide a complete user solution.
- Hardware & Control: Working with sensors, motion systems, transducers, and control hardware; supporting embedded systems and microcontroller‑based projects.
- Testing & Validation: Troubleshooting hardware and software systems, performing bench testing, and debugging electronic assemblies to ensure the highest standards of reliability for our clients.
- Technical Engagement: Attending conferences and exhibitions to support the team with technical demonstrations and customer engagement.
- Documentation: Producing high‑quality technical documentation, engineering drawings, and detailed test reports to support product development and quality procedures.
- Continuous Improvement: Contributing ideas for enhancements and new solution developments based on technical feedback and emerging research needs.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Degree (completed or in final year) in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science (with proven hardware experience).
- CAD Proficiency: Strong SolidWorks skills are essential, with experience in creating parts, assemblies, and technical drawings.
- Programming: Practical experience in at least one of the following: C#, Python, C++.
- Practical Skills: Hands‑on experience with prototyping, fabrication or 3D printing.
- Mindset: A strong problem‑solving ability and a "solutions‑focused" engineering mindset.
- Collaboration: Ability to work independently when required while contributing effectively within a small, highly skilled multidisciplinary team.
- Experience with microcontrollers (Arduino, STM32, ESP32, etc.).
- Basic electronics design, PCB assembly, or soldering/debugging skills.
- Knowledge of motion control systems or scientific instrumentation.
- A genuine interest in neuroscience, medical devices, or providing technical solutions for life sciences.
