We have a fantastic opportunity to join our Finance and Procurement Department as an Assistant Accountant.

Responsibilities

  • Assist a Finance Business Partner in the monthly and quarterly forecasting of income and expenditure.
  • Complete monthly and quarterly VAT returns.
  • Prepare and oversee the maintenance of the daily/monthly/quarterly cash flow.
  • Work with payroll to ensure all statutory deductions are accounted for and associated returns and remittances are submitted promptly.
  • Ensure all annual statutory returns are completed and submitted as required.
  • Carry out monthly and year‑end balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Assist in the preparation of year‑end financial statements and the preparation of lead schedules and associated working papers.
  • Liaise with external and internal auditors.
  • Complete the monthly checks on balances on ledgers and trial balance balances before close down of the monthly accounts.
  • Check asset purchases in month and add as appropriate to the asset register, perform depreciation runs and monitor capital spend monthly.
  • Assist in other roles as and when required to provide cover during holidays and busy periods.
  • Draft written commentaries explaining variances.
  • Support the Finance Business Partners in year‑end processes including account reconciliation, year‑end adjustment and analysis.
  • Support risk management at the operational level and ensure alignment with the College's strategic risk register.

Education & Training

  • AAT qualified, or equivalent professional experience.
  • GCSE 4‑9 or equivalent level 2 qualification in Maths, or be prepared to pass a test before the interview to demonstrate level 2 ability, then achieve within an agreed timescale.
  • GCSE 4‑9 or equivalent level 2 qualification in English, or be prepared to pass a test before the interview to demonstrate level 2 ability, then achieve within an agreed timescale.

Experience

  • Experience in financial / management accounting.
  • Experience in completing reconciliations.
  • Knowledge of financial processes, and systems e.g. Fixed asset register, month‑end, trial balance.
