We are working closely alongside a local authority in Tower Hamlets to assist with the appointment of a Planning Officer on a 2-month contract, highly likely to be extended at the client's discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration.

Rate of Pay: £24.12 - £31.82 per hour

Summary: The Planning Officer (Grade I) provides high-quality specialized planning services tailored to the needs of Tower Hamlets' diverse, multi-cultural communities. This role involves managing planning proposals and applications, developing planning policy, and delivering strategic planning projects. As a Grade I officer, you are expected to operate at Level 2 of the career grade framework, demonstrating professional judgment and competence in complex planning matters.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a caseload of major and complex planning proposals, initiatives, and projects simultaneously, balancing conflicting priorities under pressure.
  • Lead detailed negotiations on allocated planning work to ensure developments meet strategic objectives and local needs.
  • Provide expert technical advice to developers, consultants, and the public.
  • Undertake the Council's responsibilities for processing and determining planning applications, including listed building consents and enforcement of planning control.
  • Evaluate the need for and review Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Sustainability Appraisals.
  • Represent the Council at public inquiries, informal hearings, and community forums, preparing necessary reports for Committees and Sub-Committees.
  • Plan and prepare public consultation exercises in accordance with the Statement of Community Involvement (SCI).

Qualifications:

  • Must have successfully completed an RTPI (Royal Town Planning Institute) accredited postgraduate planning degree.

Essentials:

  • Generally requires 2 years of planning experience (desirable).
  • Experience in at least one specialized area: Development Management, Plan Making, or Place Making (design and conservation) is essential.
  • Experience interpreting and assessing plans and technical planning documents.
  • Detailed knowledge of planning and regeneration issues within inner London.
  • Good understanding of national, London-wide, and local planning legislation and policy.
