Job Description:

We are working closely with a local authority in Lambeth to assist with the appointment of a Democratic Services Officer, on a 6.5-months contract, highly likely to be extended at clients discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration.

Rate of Pay: £20.12- £26.52 per hour

Summary:

The Democratic Services Officer plays a vital role in supporting the Council's democratic decision-making processes by providing professional administrative and procedural support to committees, sub-committees, working parties, quasi-judicial bodies, and other member-level meetings. The role requires a proactive and organised individual with experience in committee administration, excellent written communication skills, and a sound understanding of local government governance and decision-making arrangements.

Responsibilities:

  • Organise meetings, prepare agendas, coordinate reports, and distribute meeting documentation within prescribed deadlines.
  • Attend meetings, including evening meetings as required, and provide procedural and administrative support.
  • Advise Chairs, Members, and officers on Standing Orders, constitutional requirements, decision-making processes, and procedural matters.
  • Ensure meetings are conducted in accordance with legislation, Council procedures, and governance frameworks.
  • Ensure proceedings comply with relevant legislation, principles of natural justice, and internal procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Degree-level qualification or equivalent relevant experience.

Essentials:

  • Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to democratic services, governance, or public administration.
  • Experience working within a Democratic Services environment.
  • Experience servicing committees, working parties, panels, and quasi-judicial meetings.
  • Understanding of local government administrative law and constitutional procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience of using Modern.Gov, committee management systems, databases, or CRM systems.
