We are working closely alongside a Local Authority in Runnymede to assist with the appointment of a Green Spaces Officer, on a 10-month contract, highly likely to be extended at clients discretion. Green Spaces Officer will lead improvement projects across local parks, playgrounds, open spaces, and allotments while fostering strong collaborative relationships with internal departments, external stakeholders, community groups, and contractors. You will provide technical guidance, support hands‑on conservation work, and oversee contractors and volunteers to ensure high‑quality, safe, and sustainable green spaces across the borough.
Responsibilities
- Organise, coordinate, and supervise improvement projects across parks, playgrounds, open spaces, and allotments, ensuring delivery on time and within budget.
- Liaise with the in-house grounds maintenance team to monitor standards of work, supply technical guidance, and champion best practice.
- Collaborate with internal departments (such as Community Services), Councillors, external agencies, Friends groups, residents, contractors, and businesses to advise from an operational perspective and deliver strategic goals.
- Work alongside grounds maintenance teams, Green Space colleagues, the Tree team, and volunteers on occasional practical conservation, planting, and habitat creation projects.
- Supervise external contractors and community volunteers on various schemes designed to enhance the value of the borough's green spaces.
- Assist in developing and updating management plans for various parks and green space assets.
- Support the coordination and management of public events in green spaces as required.
- Proven ability to manage all operational activities in accordance with proper Health and Safety standards and Council policies, including preparing and reviewing risk assessments and risk/benefit analyses.
Qualifications
- Practical experience or relevant qualification in horticulture, park management, conservation, or environmental management.
- Experience supervising contractors, managing budgets, and coordinating projects in public or open spaces.
- Excellent communication skills with experience liaising with community groups, volunteers, local residents, and multi-agency stakeholders.
