Overview
12 month FTC. Up to Β£75,000 + Pension + PMI + ShareSave + 6.6 weeks holiday + Hybrid Working (1/2 days per week in the office). Location: Southampton, Store Support Office. Role Purpose: As a Senior Product Designer on a 12-month fixed-term contract, you\\\βll work on design initiatives ranging across the Findability, Product Detail Page (PDP) and My Account squads β pivotal areas of the B&Q customer journey. You\\\βll bring strategic design thinking, strong craft, and collaborative energy to shape how customers discover and engage with our products. Working closely with product managers, engineers, researchers, and stakeholders at both B&Q and Group level, you\\\βll define problems, explore opportunities, and deliver elegant, user-centred solutions that drive both customer satisfaction and commercial performance. You\\\βll be involved in the full design lifecycle β from discovery to delivery β ensuring every touchpoint is intuitive, inclusive, and impactful. This FTC role offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to B&Q\\\βs digital transformation. You\\\βll help evolve design standards, mentor others, and influence how we work β leaving a lasting legacy through the experiences you help shape.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end product design across digital and omni-channel experiences, ensuring that experience solutions are intuitive, accessible, and aligned with user and business goals.
- Although your primary focus will be on Mobile-First web platforms, you\\\βll be encouraged and expected to consider the app experience too, ensuring a cohesive customer experience across touchpoints.
- Proactively identify design opportunities, define objectives, and recommend appropriate design approaches based on project scope, timelines, and priorities.
- Translate user needs, business requirements, and technical constraints into actionable design solutions that mitigate delivery risks and enhance user satisfaction.
- Foster collaboration across cross-functional teams β including product, engineering, data and ecommerce teams β to deepen understanding of user behaviours and ensure cohesive design execution.
- Leverage existing research, internal insights, and external data to inform design decisions, identify gaps, and propose innovative solutions.
- Plan and run evaluative research (e.g. usability testing, prototype testing) to validate your designs, and iterate quickly based on insights, following Lean UX and Agile principles.
- Apply an experimentation mindset, working with Optimisation teams to validate assumptions and drive measurable outcomes.
- Champion user-centred design practices across teams and contribute to the evolution of design processes, tooling, and governance within the organisation.
- Actively contribute to shared design processes of feedback and craft discussions, maturing our design systems and pattern libraries, promoting consistency and reuse across product areas.
- Take ownership of the quality and coherence of the user experience across touchpoints, ensuring designs are evidence-based and meet user expectations and that the final built solution is the experience as designed.
- Contribute to design strategy by identifying long-term opportunities and helping prioritise initiatives that will deliver the greatest impact for customers and the business.
- Proven experience as a practical, hands-on Senior Product Designer (or equivalent role) in ecommerce or other customer-facing digital products.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end product design: discovery, UX, UI and interaction design.
- Skilled at designing inclusive, frictionless ecommerce experiences that put customers first and deliver measurable value to the business.
- Expertise in responsive web design (desktop and mobile); app design experience a plus.
- Experienced in Lean UX and experimentation practices (A/B testing, data-driven design decisions).
- Able to plan and conduct evaluative research (e.g. usability testing, prototype validation) and apply insights directly to design work.
- Good knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g. WCAG) and how to design inclusively.
- Proficient in design and prototyping tools (Figma, Adobe Creative Suite etc).
- Strong understanding of design systems and component-based design.
- Naturally collaborative and curious, eager to challenge assumptions and improve ways of working.
- Skilled at simplifying complexity and designing intuitive user journeys.
- A confident storyteller and communicator, able to articulate design rationale and customer impact.
- Strong feedback skills, able to give and receive constructive critique in design reviews, from peers and stakeholders.
- Continuously curious and improvement-driven, staying current with new technologies and trends and promoting innovation across the team.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience with native app design (iOS/Android)
- Familiarity with designing experiences for complex businesses, the DIY market or retail in general.
- Exposure to service design or mapping customer journeys beyond digital touchpoints.
- Knowledge of analytics and insights tools (GA, Contentsquare, Hotjar etc) and how to apply insights to design decisions.
- Experience contributing to or evolving design systems at scale.
- Familiarity with experimentation and optimisation platforms (Optimizely, AB Tasty etc).
- Awareness of accessibility testing tools and practices.
- Basic understanding of front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, Javascript etc) to support collaboration with engineers.
