BPTW is looking for an experienced Senior Urban Designer, with a real passion for shaping places and communities.

Your Role

You will be working at the forefront of placemaking, collaborating with Local Authorities to develop council strategies, town centre visions, and community-led design that makes a real difference to people’s lives. You will lead the delivery of ambitious, large-scale urban design projects, from site-specific development briefs and spatial strategies, to research partnerships with Government informing future planning and design guidance. Working closely with our Partners and Directors, you will coordinate multidisciplinary teams and nurture the next generation of designers, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to grow through exposure to exciting projects, bids and competitions.

What you will bring

  • You will demonstrate a strong passion for urban design and the role it plays in shaping places and communities.
  • You will be able to strategically plan project delivery, creating visions and framework documents utilising your strong graphics and design skills.
  • Proven track record in masterplanning and design codes, with the ability to bring ideas to life through compelling graphic communication, translating complex strategies into clear, inspiring visuals that engage communities, clients, and stakeholders alike.
  • Comfortable communicating to a wide range of audiences.
  • Experience delivering design-led policy and urban design strategies in the UK.
  • Working knowledge across all urban design phases across projects and design codes.
  • Able to demonstrate strong design and graphics skills.
  • Experienced in working with the public sector including local authorities.
  • Job running experience, with the ability to lead an internal project team and collaborate with multidisciplinary consultant teams.
  • Confident in client, consultant, and local authority liaison.
  • Strong knowledge of national and local planning policy, and design codes.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • A background in architectural design, particularly residential, at feasibility and pre-planning stages.
  • Experience in Planning Consultations and Community Engagement.
  • Experience in preparing planning applications.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Ability to design and develop engaging presentations.
  • Project management skills, such as programming jobs.
  • Good working knowledge of Excel.
  • Familiarity with SketchUp.
  • Ability to prepare masterplans or experience in housing led masterplans.

Person specification

  • Passionate about urban design and the role it plays in shaping places and communities.
  • Strong strategic thinker, with experience formulating visions, strategies and framework documents.
  • Experienced in leading community engagement and co-design processes.
  • Skilled in masterplanning and design codes, ideally for both the public and private sectors, with a likely strong architectural background.
  • An excellent communicator, equally at writing council-facing documents or presenting to a room of residents.
  • Collaborative by nature, generous with knowledge, calm under pressure and flexible.
  • Curious and externally focused, drawing on developments in design, policy and research to inform your work.
