Student Counsellor in Peacehaven

Our collaborative approach includes learning support, mental health and wellbeing support, and safeguarding.

We work closely with other BPP services to ensure a joined‑up approach, so that learners and students can thrive both personally and academically.

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced and learner‑centric individual to join the team as our Student Counsellor.

You will be responsible for offering a responsive, specialist counselling and referral service to students and learners experiencing a wide range and degree of emotional and psychological difficulty, thus ensuring student retention, widening participation, academic achievement, academic participation and progression.

You will also play a key role in contributing to the implementation of our Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy, ensuring that current students have access to, and engage with, Mental Health and Wellbeing support.

The role is based on a hybrid working model from our Portslade office in London, and travel to other London sites may be necessary to support the requirements of the role.

• What we’ll be doing
• Providing confidential counselling and wellbeing support to students and staff.
• Assessing and supporting individuals experiencing mental health difficulties or emotional distress.
• Identifying and managing risk, including safeguarding, self‑harm and suicide concerns.
• Responding quickly and appropriately to wellbeing disclosures and support requests.
• Managing a varied caseload, including short‑term, longer‑term and crisis interventions.
• Using analytical and judgement skills across complex presenting facts or situations in devising an appropriate response and therapeutic intervention.
• Making referrals to specialist external services when additional support is needed.
• Working with colleagues across the organisation to coordinate effective student support.
• Maintaining accurate, confidential records and contributing to reporting and service improvement.
• Promoting mental health awareness through campaigns, training, workshops and student engagement activities.

Qualifications

• Diploma or higher qualification in counselling/psychotherapy – Accreditation/Registration with BACP, UKCP or other relevant professional body.
• Sound working knowledge of the BACP ethical framework.
• Ability to provide short‑term solution focused counselling within a multi‑modality service.
• Experience of working in a multi‑agency team approach.
• Clear understanding and professional awareness in relation to data protection/GDPR requirements and dealing with highly confidential information.
• Resilient, confident and passionate about improving wellbeing and mental health.
• Ability to work autonomously and make decisions using sound professional judgement and expertise.
• Self‑reflective, with highly developed interpersonal and emotional intelligence skills.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex and clinically sensitive information to clients and professional colleagues both within and outside of BPP.
• Strong understanding of the diverse support needs of the changing learner and academic community.
• Excellent attention to detail with ability to prioritise tasks and work to deadlines.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS check.
