Job Description:
Purpose of role
bp ventures plays a key role in helping support bp’s future growth ambitions. We do this by investing in a portfolio of high growth technology businesses aligned to our future areas of business focus. We have invested over $1bn into over 70 companies and manage an active portfolio of around 30 companies today.
The ventures investment analyst is a key member of the bp ventures team. This role provides commercial financial support on all matters across Venturing. This includes assistance with economic modelling and financial due diligence for new ventures deals and follow-on financing rounds, supporting quarterly fund valuations, performance reporting and providing financial insights on the portfolio to the ventures leadership team, and ensuring timely and accurate records are maintained for all investments.
Key Accountabilities
- Develop strong relationships with the ventures team, working together to deliver new deals and manage the existing ventures portfolio effectively.
- Contribute to a strong, independent control framework to ensure consistency, good practice, and security across ventures activities.
- Support the ventures team with financial matters, directing questions to appropriate experts and providing a bridge to other finance teams throughout bp.
Investment management
- Assist the investment managers with the economic and financial analysis of Ventures investment cases and the assessment of the impact on the ventures balance sheet and P&L of investment activities.
- Contribute to the financial due diligence process on ventures deals and support the broader due diligence process, liaising with other functions to ensure dd is complete.
- Support the SPA and investment manager in the production of deal decision packs and investment committee documentation.
- Lead and manage the counterparty due diligence and vendor setup processes for potential new investments.
- Manage the SFN process, ensuring all approvals are in place prior to submitting funds.
- Initiate and monitor the payment process for investment funds ensuring compliance with all controls.
Portfolio management
- Provide financial reports and fund performance information for use at the monthly SS&V Investment committee, evaluation of investments process, and other meetings.
- Liaise with portfolio companies to ensure timely receipt of financial and commercial information according to the appropriate shareholder agreements.
- Maintain portfolio company records in the portfolio management system (iLevel) and ensure key deal documents are appropriately managed and stored.
- Assist with the Ventures Portfolio Review (VPR) process, ensuring all portfolio company reviews are completed and developing materials to ensure an effective and robust discussion.
Valuations and group reporting
- Manage the ventures operational budget ensuring robust cost controls.
- Assist the investment managers with the quarterly valuation process for the fund.
- Liaise with the GBS finance team to support the quarterly reporting and accounting of the ventures portfolio.
- Support the annual statutory audit process.
- Input into the group forecasting and reporting processes.
Experience & Expertise
Required Educational background & Experience
- Degree educated or equivalent with relevant post qualification business, accounting, finance or investment analysis experience.
- Strong financial knowledge (accounting, finance or investment analysis experience), ideally including some experience of strategic finance or venture capital.
- Ability to quickly understand different areas of technological innovation to identify the key commercial drivers and to build investment economic models.
Essential Competencies & Skills
- Strong communication skills, with ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams, across team boundaries and in an international context.
- Knowledge and experience of financial modelling.
- Self-starter, excellent organisational and prioritisation skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and within tight timescales.
- Strategic and analytical thinking, and capacity to learn.
- Strong personal integrity.
- Data analysis and presentation skills.
- Knowledge of valuation methodologies.
- Experience in implementing control or governance processes.
Preferred skills
- Relevant post graduate qualification, e.g. CIMA, ACCA, ACA, CPA.
- Due diligence, M&A, VC or PE experience.
- Familiarity with accounting standards for financial assets and equity accounted entities.
