Description: bp's corporate Mergers & Acquisitions ("M&A") team's anchor role is to provide a centre of expertise in executing acquisitions, disposals, joint ventures and asset restructurings within the bp Group, with a value in excess of US$50 million.
M&A's core expertise lies in its advisory and transactional ability.
On the advisory side we have knowledge and experience in analysing assets and/or businesses to establish sources of value and minimising risks and liabilities.
On the transactional front our experience and skills are deployed in assessing the market, pricing and bidding, running sell-side auctions, negotiation, and project management of a transaction to completion.
This involves close collaboration with segments and functions internally and numerous external parties including corporates, investment banks, engineering firms, financial investors and advisors.
We develop a broad corporate development capability through our access to the internal strategic context and an acute awareness of the evolving external market.
The M&A team plays a pivotal role in helping bp in the delivery of its energy transition plans.
Role summary
M&A Strategy Manager role is a new role within M&A.
Reporting to the SVP M&A and Business Development, this role will be responsible for systematically shaping bp’s M&A agenda by identifying, evaluating, and prioritising acquisition and divestment opportunities across the portfolio.
This includes ownership of the M&A research and market intelligence, including maintaining the M&A connection with third party data providers.
They will also act as a flexible resource to support and occasionally lead discrete M&A projects.
This role is based in London and is part of bp’s global M&A team.
What you will do
- Build and maintain a live, prioritised pipeline of inorganic opportunities across bp’s portfolio, grounded in strategic rationale and value creation potential.
- Lead development of robust financial models (valuation, accretion/dilution, synergy modelling, scenario analysis) to inform decision-making.
- Assess and recommend deal structures and engagement strategies.
- Work with businesses and functions to identify and progress divestment candidates and portfolio optimisation opportunities.
- Have regular contact with external professionals who may be assisting bp in either project or option deliberation or execution (banks, financial advisors, etc.).
- Maintain bp’s defence policy and playbook to support rapid bp ELT / Board decision making in defence scenarios.
- Prepare materials in support of M&A’s agenda for the Group CFO, bp ELT, the Board and other relevant partners.
- Act as the main point-of-contact for market intelligence, including information on listed companies, details of precedent transactions and general market context.
- Maintain M&A’s team access to the relevant intelligence databases, including negotiating fees and renewals.
- Support and (subject to performance) occasionally lead on individual M&A projects.
- What you will bring
- Strong understanding of corporate finance theory economic evaluation methodologies and risk management tools.
- Experience in financial analyses, economic modelling & valuation including the development of project and company financial models which include complex financings, and proforma analyses.
- Proficiency in using financial research solutions (Factset, Bloomberg, etc.) and ability to apply these tools to financial modelling.
- Project management skills with attention to detail and the ability to work independently and as a self-starter.
- Understanding of broader oil & gas industry’s strategic context.
- Prior experience in peer portfolio analysis.
- Experience and proven track-record of preparing Executive and Board level materials.
- Sound judgment, commercial awareness, ability to solve problems.
- Ability to build and manage relationships with a diverse group of global functional professionals.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to interface effectively with senior executives.
Desirable Criteria
- Knowledge and prior experience of BP’s GIAAP and EEM policies application.
- Previous M&A / negotiation experience.
- Demonstrated leadership skills – leading a team or projects.
- Experience of managing external relationships (partners, counterparties, governments).

This role will start in St James' Square, London. bp has announced a planned office move to Timber Square, London, with all positions currently advertised in St James' Square, including this one, expected to relocate around Q4 2027-Q1 2028.
