Our purpose is to bring together people, energy and markets to power and navigate a changing world. In a time of constant change and possibility we need new talent to pursue commercial opportunities, fuelled by world-class insight and expertise. We’re always striving for more innovative digital solutions, sustainable outcomes and closer collaboration across our company and beyond, and you could be part of that too.
About the role:
The Customs & Excise Advisor will provide dedicated support to bp’s Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) business. As bp continues to expand into new markets and scale its activities in existing ones, the role plays a key part in ensuring the business is supported by strong customs and excise subject‐matter expertise.
The position is responsible for advising on the customs and excise implications of importing, exporting, storing, processing and moving commodities across borders in the UK, Europe and globally, including products subject to both customs & excise duty. In addition to delivering technical guidance, the role contributes to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at strengthening supply‐chain risk management.
Success in this role requires strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex tax matters clearly and effectively—often at short notice—to help non‐tax colleagues understand their commercial impact. The Advisor shall collaborate with subject‐matter experts across bp’s global network as we continue to advance energy solutions worldwide.
What you will deliver:
- Act as a trusted advisor to trading, origination and operations teams on the customs and excise implications of cross-border commodity movements
- Provide clear, practical guidance on classification, origin, valuation and customs procedures across the UK, EU and global jurisdictions
- Support deal structuring and market entry decisions, ensuring customs and excise considerations are embedded early
- Identify and manage indirect tax risks, aligning with bp’s Indirect Tax Compliance Framework (ITCF)
- Design and implement simplified, scalable processes to enhance compliance and improve operational efficiency
- Respond proactively to regulatory and geopolitical changes, supporting business continuity and risk mitigation
- Build strong relationships with a broad stakeholder group, including traders, operators, commercial teams and tax colleagues
What we’re looking for:
Essential experience & skills
- Strong expertise in customs classification, origin, valuation, customs clearance processes, preferably in both EU and UK or even beyond
- Experience supporting cross-border movements of goods in complex, fast-paced environments
- Ability to translate technical tax concepts into clear, commercially relevant advice
- Proven stakeholder management skills, with confidence working with commercial and operational teams
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to operate effectively in dynamic, evolving environments
Nice to have
- Knowledge of UK/EU excise duty regulations
- Experience in energy, commodities, trading or logistics environments
- Familiarity with customs systems, automation or digitalisation initiatives (e.g., SAP GTS or similar tools)
- Project management experience across regulatory or business change initiatives
