Join bp Shipping and help support the safe and reliable operation of our LNG fleet. As an Assistant Marine Superintendent, you will work with Marine Superintendents and Vessel Managers to support marine operations, vessel assurance, regulatory compliance, and fleet performance. You will provide marine expertise across vessel operations and projects while helping maintain high standards in safety, navigation, cargo handling, maintenance, and assurance. This role offers the opportunity to apply your maritime experience in a global business and contribute to the transportation of energy around the world.
Key Accountabilities
- Support the marine technical management of bp Shipping's operated fleet, including vessel availability, marine operations, dry dock planning, ship/shore compatibility assessments, and implementation of marine operating standards.
- Develop Marine Assurance documentation and support assurance activities including SIRE inspections, incident investigations, Safety & Operational Risk Assessments, Flag State inspections, Class assessments, corrective action management, and ship visit reporting.
- Monitor maritime legislation and industry guidance, incorporating relevant requirements into marine procedures, standards, and working practices.
- Provide marine and LNG expertise to technical, project, and partnership teams through risk assessments, operational reviews, and business initiatives.
- Support vessel maintenance programmes, equipment replacement activities, Master appraisals, recruitment activities, training initiatives, and cadet inductions.
- Engage with regulators, NGOs, classification societies, flag administrations, and industry bodies to support shipping quality and marine safety.
- Fulfil a role within the bp Shipping Incident Management Team (IMT) or Business Support Team (BST) and participate in training and emergency response exercises.
Essential Education
- Senior Mariner Certification or equivalent professional marine qualification.
- Gas Dangerous Cargo Endorsement.
Essential Experience & Requirements
- Experience in a senior shipboard role on LNG vessels.
- Experience in a marine operational or technical role ashore.
- Understanding of LNG vessel operations, navigation, cargo handling, and marine safety management.
- Knowledge of HSSE principles and marine operations.
- Ability to handle priorities and deliver results in a changing operational environment.
- Ability to analyse technical issues and identify practical solutions.
- Communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work across teams and influence others.
- Commitment to safety, continuous improvement, and delivery of high standards.
Desirable Experience
- Knowledge of IMO regulations and maritime legislation.
- Experience with HAZOP, HAZID, Root Cause Analysis, and other risk assessment methodologies.
- Understanding of bp Shipping operations and commercial shipping activities.
- Experience supporting SIRE inspections and tanker assurance activities.
- Ability to communicate marine concepts to non-marine partners.
- Involvement in industry working groups, shipping associations, or regulatory forums.
Travel Requirement
Up to 25% travel should be expected with this role.
