This role sits within the Shipping Optimisation team and is essential to our commercial performance strategy in bp ST&S. The team focuses on delivering commercial value by improving energy efficiency in ship operations, leveraging digital tools, and collaborating across functions to generate value faster and smarter.
We are seeking an experienced, data-driven technical lead to execute energy efficiency activities and deliver optimisation initiatives across our operated, and chartered tanker fleet. In this role, you will combine technical expertise with strong analytical skills to achieve operational improvements and measurable impact through energy efficiency activities, vessel/voyage performance optimisation, and implementation of digital solutions that enable our performance improvement strategy. You will work closely with technical, commercial, operational and digital teams to ensure timely execution of agreed actions to meet business objectives, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Key Accountabilities- Support management in execution of performance strategy, ensuring alignment with corporate sustainability goals, regulatory compliance, and operational perfection.
- Conduct proactive monitoring and periodic review of vessel performance data to assess efficiency of the hull, propeller, propulsion systems, power plant, and other energy consumers. Identify deviations from benchmarks, investigate root causes, and recommend actionable improvements to increase upside.
- Manage data collection and validation from noon reports, connected sensors, and electronic logs to ensure availability, integrity, accuracy and auditability of records.
- Project implementation of digital connectivity projects related to vessel performance systems. Supervise operation of digital tools and dashboards for energy efficiency monitoring and provide timely reporting to management.
- Enhance vessel and voyage optimisation capability of the team, establish performance benchmarks, and provide insights to partners on best-performing ships for specific trades.
- Collaborate with bp TC partners, internal teams, and service providers to drive vessel performance and optimisation activities.
- Prepare and review optimisation models, including case evaluations and benefit tracking for operational and technical interventions. Identify innovative opportunities to add commercial value and reduce value leakage.
- Optimise emissions-related costs (ETS/FuelEU/IMO) while ensuring strict compliance with international and regional regulations.
- Conduct detailed post-voyage assessments to capture findings, improve voyage planning, and enhance predictive performance models.
- Interpret charter party clauses and provide data analytics and reports to support vessel underperformance claims to prevent value leakage.
- Experience in marine engineering or naval architecture and/or qualified mariner / shipboard marine engineer.
- Consistent record of driving energy efficiency and delivering complex projects in fleet operations or ship management.
- Deep technical knowledge & hands-on experience with ship propulsion systems, hydrodynamics, energy efficiency and emission metrics, and fleet energy management procedures.
- Experience with industry-standard digital tools (vessel performance systems), ship automation, and marine digital/ship-shore connectivity projects. General competence in advanced data analytics and visualisation tools is desirable.
- Good understanding of international and regional maritime regulations, including IMO, EU/UK ETS, and FuelEU Maritime regulatory frameworks.
- Well-rounded skills including analytical thinking, problem-solving, data-led decision-making, clear communication, and strong project and stakeholder management capabilities.
- Recent hands-on experience in energy efficiency and emissions monitoring, reporting, and optimization within the oil and gas shipping.
- Sea service in a senior ranks.
- Master’s degree in relevant subject matter.
- Project management certification.
- Solid understanding of energy management best practices such as ISO 50001.
