Our purpose is to bring together people, energy and markets to power and navigate a changing world. bp’s London‑based Litigation and Disputes Team (“the Team”) is seeking to add a lawyer to join its specialist global legal team. The Team manages major non‑US commercial disputes worldwide, handling complex, high‑value international arbitrations, litigation in England and other common as well as civil law jurisdictions, expert determinations and ADR processes. Team members collaborate closely with bp’s commercial lawyers and business teams across diverse sectors, including production and operations, trading and shipping, and gas and low‑carbon energy.

The role involves managing complex litigation and dispute resolution tasks, providing strategic advisory support, and leading internal and external legal and business teams to mitigate risks and avoid formal disputes. Direct oversight of international arbitrations, litigation, expert determinations, and ADR processes is required, along with active cost management and cross‑jurisdictional coordination.

Key Accountabilities
  • Identify legal, financial, and reputational risks from major non‑US commercial disputes and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Directly oversee international arbitrations, litigation, and ADR processes worldwide.
  • Manage external costs to ensure value for money and efficiency.
  • Collaborate closely with other Team members, commercial lawyers, and specialist lawyers.
  • Co‑ordinate and lead teams of internal lawyers, business personnel, and external counsel.
  • Develop and deploy effective settlement strategies and tactics.
Education & Qualification
  • Hold a UK legal qualification and current practising certificate.
  • Have practiced for at least four years as a specialist dispute resolution lawyer in international arbitration, litigation, and ADR.
Job Requirements
  • Experience handling disputes in common and civil law jurisdictions, including cross‑border, multi‑jurisdictional, and foreign law matters.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify and assess risks in complex contentious matters.
  • Understand business needs while providing independent risk assessment.
  • Excellent communication, including strong writing and drafting skills.
  • Pragmatic problem‑solving approach.
  • Ability to explain complex legal issues to non‑legal audiences at all levels.
  • Desire for intellectually challenging work.
  • Appreciation of cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Experience building trusted relationships and influencing multiple collaborators.
  • Effective prioritisation of competing demands, especially under time sensitivities.
  • Comfortable working autonomously, as part of a tailored team, or leading a group responsible for dispute management.
  • Thorough understanding of the English Civil Procedure Rules and leading international arbitration institutions’ rules.
  • Proven planning and project management skills.
  • Interpersonal skills and confidence to thrive in a collaborative environment.
Desirable:
  • Experience on multidisciplinary legal teams involved with anti‑bribery, human rights, competition, and international trade issues.
