Within bp’s Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) digital organisation, this role is for the end‑to‑end operations, delivery, and support of the digital systems underpinning the Gas & Power Trading International (GPTI) business — including Gas, Power, Global LNG, and GETEC. The role exists to ensure GPTI’s critical trading, risk, and optimisation platforms are stable, scalable, secure, and continuously improving. It enables safe, compliant, and competitive trading operations across global markets by providing clear ownership for operational performance, change delivery, and risk management across a complex, high‑stakes digital estate.
Operating as the primary digital counterpart to GPTI leadership, the Senior Principal Delivery Manager plays a key role on the ST&S Digital Leadership Team. The role leads and coordinates Engineering, Data & AI, Architecture, and strategic supplier organisations to deliver resilient, high‑performing platforms; translate business strategy into aligned technology priorities; and balance operational stability with ongoing transformation. This is a senior leadership position requiring sound judgement, disciplined execution, and strong influence with partners at VP and SVP level across both business and technology.
What you will do...
- Technology portfolio leadership: Define and lead the strategy, roadmaps, investment, and budgets for GPTI’s critical trading and optimisation platforms. Act as the primary interface between business stakeholders, global technology teams, and strategic delivery partners to ensure alignment, transparency, and predictable outcomes.
- Technology delivery management: Oversee the end‑to‑end delivery of complex programmes spanning products, platforms, and business processes, and using AI‑enabled engineering and operations to accelerate delivery, uplift quality, and simplify change.
- Operational integrity: Own end‑to‑end accountability for the availability, performance, resilience, and compliance of GPTI trading and optimisation systems, including live operations, incident response, service recovery, and continuous improvement.
- Data‑driven decision making: Monitor service health, performance, and operational risk to inform prioritisation, investment decisions, and governance, enabling transparent and evidence‑based decision making.
- Resource, vendor, and financial management: Lead internal teams and strategic suppliers, utilising global delivery centres (including BTCs) to optimise cost‑to‑serve, capacity, and quality while maximising business value.
- Senior accountability and leadership: Act as the single senior point of accountability for digital outcomes with the GPTI SVP, COO, VPs, and senior partners, providing clear ownership and decision support. Lead operational and regulatory risk management, ensuring adherence to architectural, security, and policy standards in partnership with Strategy, Digital Security, Legal, and Compliance. Drive simplification, automation, and continuous improvement across the GPTI digital estate, reducing complexity, mitigating key‑person dependency, and safely adopting new technologies that improve resilience, speed, and cost efficiency.
What you will bring...
- Significant experience in senior technology delivery leadership roles, managing complex software development, operations, and service delivery across internal teams and strategic suppliers.
- Deep experience in energy or commodity trading environments, with a strong understanding of trading and risk processes and the platforms that support them (e.g. Deal modelling, Valuation, Logistics, Analytics, Risk, back-office).
- Track record in supporting critically important, high‑availability systems in regulated or time‑critical environments.
- Demonstrated ability to balance operational stability with transformation, modernisation, and continuous improvement.
- Comfortable operating within complex, multi‑vendor, globally distributed delivery ecosystems.
- Demonstrated capability to build, lead, coach, and develop high‑performing, globally dispersed teams.
- Strong executive communication skills, with high emotional intelligence and the ability to influence senior team members and leaders using clear, concise, and data‑driven insights.
- Ability to prioritise strategic outcomes while maintaining strong execution.
- Highly motivated by complex problem‑solving, with a strong bias for action, ownership, and accountability.
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a relevant subject area (e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, MIS/IT), or equivalent practical experience.
- Professional certification (e.g. PMI or equivalent) is desirable.
Desirable skills & experience:
- Experience delivering significant, complex, project-based change programmes.
- Broad experience with Energy Trading Risk Management (ETRM) system design, operation, or enhancement.
- Experience with hyperscale cloud platforms (Azure/AWS), including cost and performance optimisation.
- Strong AI and automation focus, with experience applying data‑driven and AI‑enabled practices to modernise delivery or operations.
