The Fleet Energy Manager is the functional leader of bp Shipping's energy efficiency and vessel performance optimisation team. The role is accountable for setting strategic direction, building sustainable capability, and ensuring the consistent delivery of measurable commercial and emissions value across bp's operated and time-chartered fleet. Sitting within the Shipping Optimisation organisation, the Fleet Energy Manager provides leadership across vessel energy efficiency, performance analytics, optimisation tooling, and emissions-related value delivery.
The role translates strategic intent into clear, executable priorities, ensures strong cross-functional engagement with Chartering, Operations, Digital, and Claims, and embeds optimisation as a repeatable, system-driven operating rigor, rather than ad-hoc intervention. The role has direct people-management responsibility for technical leads and specialists, and acts as a key senior work with leadership, regulators, and external partners to drive performance improvement, regulatory compliance, and value realisation.
Key Accountabilities:
- Lead and support execution of bp Shipping's energy efficiency and performance optimisation strategy, ensuring alignment with commercial priorities, corporate sustainability goals, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.
- Provide oversight and direction to the team responsible for vessel and voyage performance monitoring, ensuring consistent assessment of hull, propeller, propulsion systems, power plant, and other energy consumers across the fleet.
- Ensure effective investigation of performance deviations, validation of root cause analysis, and prioritisation of high-value optimisation interventions.
- Provide governance and assurance of performance and energy data, ensuring robust processes for data collection, validation, auditability, and reporting across noon reports, connected sensors, and digital logs.
- Sponsor and oversee delivery of digital connectivity and vessel performance systems, ensuring tools, dashboards, and analytics are adopted effectively and support scalable optimisation.
- Build and continuously improve the team's vessel and voyage optimisation capability, including performance benchmarking, best-in-class standards, and insight-led decision making.
- Act as the Lead optimisation collaborate with Chartering, Operations, Claims, Digital, and bp TC partners to ensure performance insights translate into commercial outcomes.
- Provide leadership oversight of optimisation cases, benefit tracking, and value realisation, ensuring transparent governance and prevention of value leakage.
- Own the optimisation contribution to emissions cost management, ensuring compliant, cost-effective delivery and readiness for evolving regulations.
- Ensure structured post-voyage learning, feedback loops, and continuous improvement of predictive performance models and optimisation assumptions.
- Oversee the team's technical and analytical support to vessel underperformance claims, ensuring consistent interpretation, defensibility, and commercial impact.
- Translate regulatory and performance requirements into clear optimisation priorities and delivery roadmaps.
Essential Experience:
- Senior experience in shipping, fleet operations, or maritime technical leadership roles.
- Demonstrated leadership of technical and analytical teams delivering operational and commercial outcomes.
- Strong understanding of vessel performance drivers, energy efficiency, and emissions management at fleet level.
- Proven ability to convert data, analytics, and regulatory complexity into clear decisions and value-focused actions.
- Experience working across complex stakeholder environments (commercial, technical, operations, digital).
- Strong communication, judgement, and decision-making capability at senior leadership level.
- Exposure to structured energy management frameworks (e.g. ISO 50001).
Desirable Experience:
- Background in marine engineering, naval architecture, or senior seagoing roles.
- Experience operating within regulated energy or oil & gas shipping environments.
- Track record of leading optimisation, performance improvement, or transformation programmes.
- Familiarity with digital performance platforms, analytics programmes, or data-led operating models.
- Experience engaging with senior executives, regulators, and external partners.
