The Analytics & Insights team is responsible for providing analysis of Oil, Gas, Power and Emissions markets to the trading and origination teams within Trading & Shipping. Analysis performed by the team provides commercial value by keeping traders, originators, and management informed of underlying views that affect the markets as well as a toolkit to quantify these views and their price discovery.
The Lead Market Strategist role resides in the Gas and Power Strategist team, part of the Trading Analytics & Insights business unit. One of the core elements of this subject area is to identify changes in supply and demand fundamentals within different regions of the market and communicate the likely impact on prices to the trading and origination teams. This key role will work alongside the bench to provide such analysis in service of creating models, foundational views and trading strategies in line with changing market dynamics. Analysis performed by the individual and team will have a direct linkage to commercial value creation and assist in keeping traders, originators, and management informed of underlying fundamental views that affect the markets.
This Lead Market Strategist role will involve supporting our European and Asia Pacific Power team based in London and Singapore. The Lead Strategist will be tasked with orchestrating the delivery of the Market Strategists to support the trading and origination teams they work with. This will involve setting goals, people management, performance management, interested party management, customer engagement and ensuring commercial alignment with the partners. The role will also involve coordinating activities with the Gas, LNG and Carbon strategists and ensuring efficient information sharing and commercial leverage of cross commodity opportunities where appropriate. Some level of direct involvement with creating commercial views, contributing to toolkit development and coverage of gaps on the team will be required.
Applicants should have experience with European power markets and their analysis with a track record of delivering data, analysis and statistical models in a commercial environment.
Key Accountabilities:- Lead a team of Market Strategists to support the European and Apac Power & Carbon team.
- Orchestrate the delivery of fundamental analysis and decision support to the customers.
- Orchestrate the continued evolution of the toolkit used to analyze Power in these markets.
- Ensure alignment between the work of the Market Strategists and the objectives of the commercial customers.
- Manage the partner relationship to ensure clear feedback and communications between the Strategists and the customers.
- Manage a two way information flow with the Gas and LNG teams to ensure areas of overlap are aligned.
- Manage the relationship with our technical enablers on the FM&I and Core Strategist squad supporting Power to ensure support is prioritized.
- Communicate commercial and fundamental views to leadership as appropriate.
- Engage with customers as required to support origination.
- Provide ad hoc support to the trading team, originations team and the wider BP group.
- Hold a degree in a quantitative, economics, statistical, mathematical, engineering or similar subject area.
- Experience with European power markets as either a trader or an analyst on a trading/origination team.
- Extensive experience with the fundamentals that drive European Power and related markets. This includes familiarity with gas and carbon markets and fundamentals.
- Extensive experience with regulatory frameworks governing energy markets in Europe.
- Experience working with Python, SQL and Excel etc in a professional setting.
- Experience developing, interpreting and improving models to analyze and report power markets.
- Ability to interpret data and information to conclude and communicate views both formally and informally.
- Experience with managing the delivery of large, complex projects as part of a team.
- Prior experience as a team lead or line manager, preferred.
- Experience with Japan and/or Australian Power markets, preferred.
