Our purpose is to deliver energy to the world, today and tomorrow. For over 100 years, bp has focused on discovering, developing, and producing oil and gas in the nations where we operate. We are one of the few companies globally that can provide governments and customers with an integrated energy offering. Delivering our strategy sustainably is fundamental to achieving our ambition to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner.
About the role:
It is an exciting opportunity to join bp as a subject matter expert on energy use in transport in the Economics and Energy Insights (EEI) team. In this role, you will need to understand and be able to communicate the key drivers of demand within the transport sectors and the energy sources and technologies used. You will lead the forecasts for energy demand and the make-up of the fleet for road, aviation marine and rail, as well as the path to decarbonization in these sectors. You will also be responsible for contributing to EEI’s wider accountabilities to lead analysis into the future of the global energy system and generate insights to inform and guide bp’s strategy and decision making.
What you’ll be doing:
- Carry out research and engagement with internal and external experts to determine the key drivers of energy use and technology choice in the road, aviation, marine and rail sectors, the best techniques for modelling and the best data sources to use.
- Understand the impact of policy and legacy infrastructure on regional energy demand and fuel choices.
- Develop and maintain a suite of models for energy demand and carbon emissions in transport. These include econometric ‘top-down’ sector modules to use in our energy system model, more detailed ‘bottom-up’ choice models such as for road transport which start with the vehicle fleet and sales, and short-term forecasts for electric vehicle sales.
- Communicate the results of your work within bp and also externally to support bp’s advocacy goals.
- Provide ad-hoc support to our Strategy and Customer & Products business teams.
- Work closely with the rest of EEI to support the production of the team’s core outputs, including Energy Outlook, Reference Path, and Tracking the Transition.
What we’re looking for:
We know no one ticks every box — so if this role excites you, we’d still love to hear from you.
- Experience working with energy markets, ideally linked to transport
- Strong analytical skills — particularly in modelling supply/demand or economic drivers
- An interest in how transport is evolving (EVs, fuels, infrastructure, policy)
- The ability to explain complex ideas clearly to different audiences
- A collaborative approach — you’ll be working across teams and with external experts
It would be great if you also have:
- Experience with energy demand models for the transport sectors and/or experience of energy system modelling
- Specific knowledge of key aspects of energy use in road transport, for example: Available technologies for light and heavy-duty vehicles and how these differ in total cost of ownership, energy efficiency and emissions
- Biofuels in road transport – the various types and related costs and policies
- Knowledge of climate policy or the transition to lower-carbon energy
- Coding experience (e.g. Python, R)
- A broader understanding of global energy systems
