About the role: As decommissioning activity continues to expand across both BP-operated and non-operated assets, robust technical decision-making, effective onboarding, and strong oversight of both BP and outsourced operations are essential to safeguarding the company's reputation and maintaining high operational performance. The Senior Wells Engineer Decommissioning plays a critical role within the Wells Decommissioning team, taking responsibility for overseeing the technical and strategic elements of decommissioning planning and execution. This position works in close collaboration with Regional and Non-Operated Joint Venture (NOJV) teams to ensure alignment with established procedures, regulatory compliance, and cost-effective delivery of decommissioning activities. This role presents an excellent opportunity to contribute to global decommissioning operations in line with BP's strategy for wells and facilities, supporting the company's commitment to safe, efficient operations and sustainable performance within the energy sector.
Key Accountabilities:
- Provide deep technical support and assurance to regional teams on decommissioning plans, methodologies, regulatory compliance, and abandonment designs.
- Support the Projects and Regions in the selection of an external Decommissioning Operator by providing technical guidance into defining evaluation criteria, scope definition, and interface alignment.
- Support the delivery of Wells Financial Memos (FM) and Authorization for Expenditure (AFE) documents for wells decommissioning activities to ensure alignment with budgetary, regulatory, and procedure requirements.
- Deliver a systematic and controlled approach to onboarding third party Decommissioning Operator, underpinned by a detailed understanding of operational and business risk, and risk preventions/mitigations to an acceptable level, prior to successful operatorship handover as per BP and legislative requirements.
- Provide technical guidance during the execution phase to ensure delivery of decommissioning liabilities is consistent with the regions strategic intent, regulatory expectations, and BP's internal assurance processes.
- Support the Lead Senior Wells Decommissioning Engineer as they conduct knowledge sharing and collaboration with industry peers, service providers, and academia to stay abreast of latest decommissioning methodologies, technologies, and standards.
- Stay updated on current well decommissioning technologies, supplier capabilities, and industry trends to provide guidance and support to implementing teams and advise decommissioning strategy.
- Collaborate with the Technology team to identify and support technologies that enhance decommissioning safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
- Provide strategic input and mentorship to the North Sea regional team in developing Area Development Plans (ADP) and late-life planning activities to ensure proactive decommissioning preparation.
- Where appropriate support the wider team as they engage with NOJV partners to influence decommissioning estimates, late-life planning, and execution strategies to optimize cost and mitigate risks.
Essential Education and Experience Requirements:
- Engineering degree or equivalent qualification.
- Strong technical background with extensive experience in well Engineering, particularly in plug and abandonment activities.
- Demonstrable leadership and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience in cost estimation, and regulatory compliance within the oil and gas industry.
