Job Description:

Our purpose is to deliver energy to the world, today and tomorrow. For over 100 years, bp has focused on discovering, developing, and producing oil and gas in the nations where we operate. We are one of the few companies globally that can provide governments and customers with an integrated energy offering. Delivering our strategy sustainably is fundamental to achieving our ambition to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner.

About the role

The Geophysics Global Specialist (GGS) Team is looking for a specialist geophysicist in gravity and magnetics to support activity across bp’s subsurface portfolio. The team is accountable for the provision of specialist geophysics support across a range of areas, including seismic analysis and rock properties, reservoir management geophysics, and non-seismic geophysics. Activity within gravity and magnetics, and non-seismic geophysics in general, has been growing across both bp’s conventional oil and gas and low carbon projects. This role provides an excellent opportunity to experience and impact the diversity of geographies and business challenges across Subsurface and Low Carbon.

The role will give the successful individual opportunities to work with company experts in the application of gravity and magnetics and other non-seismic geophysical methods, to both deepen and broaden their existing skills. The role should be of interest to individuals with demonstrated experience working with gravity and magnetic data and that are looking to develop a career within non-seismic geophysics.

The GGS team works with both region and centrally based squads, from Exploration, Reservoir Management and Low Carbon projects. Projects can cover the breadth of gravity and magnetics work, from working with seismic delivery designing new data acquisition and processing, to building new inversion and quantitative interpretation techniques for integrating different data types. Although the initial focus of the role will be on delivery of specialist gravity and magnetics support to squads, there will be opportunities to influence and enhance our internal toolkits and workflows where gaps or improvements are identified. The GGS team is also heavily involved in supporting capability through development and delivery of formal training classes and 1-1 technical coaching.

What you will deliver

Specialist geophysical support within Exploration or Region squads including:

  • Provision and investigation of gravity and magnetic geophysical for exploration projects at a range of scales, focusing on the qualitative and quantitative interpretation of these data within a geological context.

  • Activities include 2D and 3D forward modelling and inversion, depth to source estimation techniques, uncertainty studies, gridded data enhancement.

  • Gravity and magnetics support to Seismic Delivery for contractor acquisition and processing projects.

  • Supporting appropriate use of time-lapse gravity, surface deformation and potentially EM measurements for reservoir surveillance and CCUS monitoring.

  • Running initial sensitivity modelling studies from reservoir models; working with contractors to design feasibility tests and baseline survey; Building forward modelling and inversion workflows to integrate these data types into the history matching process and constraining simulator model realisations.

  • Using professional expertise to recognise and highlight opportunities where non-seismic geophysical methods can add new value or reduce risk.

  • Where appropriate, influencing non-seismic recommendations within Seismic Fitness and Seismic Interpretation Health Check reviews.

  • Coaching support for non-specialist squad members for routine gravity and magnetic interpretation tasks.

  • Maintaining relationships with relevant 3rd party vendors of data licensing, data acquisition, software toolkit and other specialist contracting services.

Technology research and development including:

  • Enhancements of existing workflows and toolkit.

  • Identifying, reviewing and supporting external research, joint industry partnerships, or proof of concept projects with potential for business impact.

Discipline health support including:

  • Stewardship of the gravity and magnetics toolkit and workflows.

  • Development and delivery of gravity and magnetics training classes, handrails, and guidelines.

Some other key accountabilities will include:

  • Working with squads to define project objectives, scope and timing aligned with business objectives.

  • Assessing the quality and the suitability of available gravity and magnetic data sets and providing appropriate data for their use.

  • Ensuring best practice is applied appropriately to impact the key technical and business objectives.

  • When appropriate, identifying and testing new or alternative approaches.

  • Clear communication of technical insights, findings, and uncertainties.

What You will need to be successful

In addition to holding a degree in Geophysics or similar it is important that you can also demonstrate:

  • Experience in analysis and interpretation of magnetic and gravity data (Essential)

  • A desire to develop a career within non-seismic geophysics

  • Ability to integrate geophysical interpretations with other geoscience data sets, e.g., geology, geochemistry, petrophysics.

  • A strong drive for personal development including understanding both technical detail and practical applications

  • Comfort working across multiple time zones in an agile and flexible manner.

  • Good communication skills both one-to-one and working remotely.

  • Ability to work independently while comfortable seeking support when appropriate.

  • A collaborative working style.

  • A business value focussed attitude

  • Enthusiasm to trial new technologies

It would also be beneficial to have:

  • Experience with other geophysical techniques, particularly seismic and electromagnetic methods, and their integration with potential field data.

  • Experience of technical coaching

  • Familiarity using Seequent/Geosoft’s Oasis Montaj software

  • Coding skills using Python
