The Remote Operations Centre (ROC) Well Engineering Specialist is responsible for monitoring well operations and providing drilling engineering support during execution. The role focuses on delivering step‑change improvements in safety and performance by sharing best practices and lessons learned across rigs and regions, while proactively identifying and escalating risks to prevent continuation bias.
Using a data‑driven approach and digital and automation tools, the ROC Well Engineering Specialist identifies and removes drilling inefficiencies and performance barriers. The role also builds strong, collaborative working relationships across the Remote Operations Centre, regional engineering teams, and Wells technical specialists. Key Accountabilities- Non‑productive time avoidance
- Analyse and monitor real‑time operational data to prevent or minimise non‑productive time events
- Intervene when risks or improvement opportunities are identified and escalate appropriately to prevent continuation bias
- Identify recurring issues, determine root causes, and implement mitigation strategies
- Invisible lost time reduction
- Analyse rig performance to identify inefficiencies using benchmarks and lessons learned
- Review and improve engineering procedures to enhance operational efficiency
- Support the transfer of lessons learned across assets to reduce flat time
- Assurance and oversight
- Provide oversight and support to engineering deliverables, including those from remote support teams
- Verify engineering outputs for quality and compliance during critical operations
- Conduct pre‑execution checks for high‑risk activities
- Verify safety barriers through structured self‑verification processes and oversight systems
- Digital enablement and innovation
- Support the development and deployment of digital and automation tools
- Improve operational decision making through enhanced data visualisation
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on performance optimisation
- Standardisation and knowledge sharing
- Share insights and lessons learned across teams and during operational reviews
- Promote consistent drilling practices by sharing procedures across rigs
- Contribute to central knowledge platforms with case studies and operational learnings
- Emergency response support
- Provide engineering support during emergent well operations issues
- Prepare initial well control response materials
- Perform key engineering calculations such as kill sheets, kick tolerance, formation integrity tests, pressure tests, cementing calculations and hydraulics
- Review and develop operational work instructions
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related discipline
- Experience in well engineering or drilling operations
- Strong problem solving, analytical, teamwork, and communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to safety leadership and risk management
- Solid operational experience in drilling or well activities
- Experience with engineering software such as torque and drag modelling, stuck pipe analysis, hydraulics modelling, and directional drilling tools
This is a rotational role: 3 weeks on / 3 weeks off, working 12-hour day shifts.
