The Role: As a Cloud Engineer within the Platform Engineering team, you will play a key role in building, maintaining, and improving the organisation’s cloud platform through automation, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and modern DevOps practices. You will work as part of an agile squad focused on delivering secure, reusable, and standardised platform components that enable self-service cloud adoption across the business. This role is hands-on and highly collaborative — working closely with Platform Design, Platform Operations, and the Cloud Management Office to translate architectural blueprints into scalable, compliant, and automated cloud infrastructure. You will contribute to the success of the organisation’s cloud transformation by helping to deliver the foundation services that underpin digital applications and innovation.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering & Delivery: Build, test, and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) templates and automation scripts (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible). Support the delivery of platform services following secure-by-design and policy-as-code principles. Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines, enabling automated deployment and configuration of cloud resources. Contribute to the Platform Engineering backlog, delivering against agreed sprint goals and project milestones. Collaborate with Platform Design to implement architectural standards and enforce platform consistency. Work with Platform Operations to ensure smooth handover and operability of released components. Participate in incident management and root cause analysis for platform-related issues.
- Security, Compliance & Governance: Implement cloud security controls and enforce compliance guardrails through automation. Support continuous monitoring and observability, using cloud-native or third-party tooling. Follow governance and FinOps guidelines as defined by the Cloud Management Office. Ensure IaC and automation artefacts are version-controlled, peer-reviewed, and documented.
- Agile & Collaboration: Participate actively in agile ceremonies (daily stand-ups, sprint planning, retrospectives). Work closely with the Platform Engineering Lead and Cloud Services Manager to deliver consistent, predictable sprint outcomes. Contribute to backlog refinement and provide estimates and technical input for upcoming work. Promote a DevOps mindset — driving collaboration, automation, and continuous improvement.
- Continuous Improvement & Innovation: Identify opportunities to enhance platform automation, performance, and developer experience. Experiment with emerging cloud and DevOps technologies, sharing knowledge across the team. Contribute to internal documentation and reusable code libraries to improve team efficiency. Support the development of self-service capabilities for application and delivery teams.
The Person
- Experience: 2–4 years’ experience in cloud engineering, DevOps, or infrastructure automation roles. Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Bicep. AWS certification (preferred) and/or Azure certification. Experience integrating IaC with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, GitLab, Code pipeline). Understanding of cloud networking, identity and access management, and security fundamentals. Exposure to monitoring, observability, and incident response practices. Working knowledge of scripting languages (Python, PowerShell, Bash).
- Skills & Attributes: Strong technical aptitude with attention to detail and quality. Collaborative team player with excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Curious and proactive — eager to learn new tools and technologies. Passionate about automation, DevOps culture, and cloud best practices. Organised and self-motivated, comfortable working in an agile, fast-paced environment.
Reporting Line: Reports to: Platform Engineering Lead. Works closely with: Cloud Services Manager, Platform Design, and Platform Operations teams.
Career Path: This role provides a development pathway toward Senior Cloud Engineer or Platform Engineering Lead, offering opportunities to broaden skills across architecture, automation, and platform service ownership.
