Summary
Conducts thermal related product development activities and helps to train new engineers and technicians.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Heat Transfer and Heat Pipe Analysis: Demonstrate an intimate understanding of conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer as well as demonstrating an in-depth understanding of heat pipe operation and performance prediction.
- Solid Modeling: Average to proficient at designing products with an approved solid modeling program and creating properly dimensioned drawings to geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) standards (ANSI/ASME Y14.5M-1994).
- CFD Analysis: Average to proficient at CFD analysis using one or more approved programs such as Flotherm or Icepak.
- Technical Writing and Reporting: Skilled at independently writing technical reports, proposals, journal papers, and technical articles. Possessing good writing and presentation skills is essential at this level.
- Presentation Skills: Possessing good presentation skills is essential at this level.
- Sales Support: Supports sales through proposal writing, conducting analysis, and generating solutions to customer’s requirements, preparing datasheets, customer visits and preparing cost/bid support information.
- “Hands On” related duties (Minimum of 25% of time): Most of engineering project work involves the design, fabrication and testing of prototype hardware. As a result, Boyd encourages “Hands‑on” engineering activity. The engineer will plan and direct technicians or other engineering staff in conducting laboratory work and experiments. This work involves conducting complex thermal related experiments to test, prove, that the prototype is functioning properly.
- Inventiveness: Evaluates research findings to develop new concepts, products, equipment, or processes and develops new uses for these applications or findings.
- Project Management: Ensures that customer deliveries are met on time. Deliverables include hardware, reports, technical data, proposals, etc. If dates are in jeopardy of falling behind (i.e. not On‑Time), notifies Sr. Management immediately to ensure resources are properly applied to the project to restore or minimize the impact on the schedule.
- Quality: Ensures prototype/pre‑production units fabricated under their control meet customer and Boyd quality specifications/expectations.
- Customer Communication: Ensures that the customer is notified of any technical or delivery changes/problems immediately upon discovery. Any communication to the customer shall be coordinated with the proper sales person.
- Financial: Responsible for ensuring each project they are personally responsible for meets the targeted cost budget.
- Intellectual Property: Actively maintains control of company related intellectual property, trade secrets and patents. Assures that all new inventions are documented in an Invention Disclosure Information, IDI Form and submitted to the patent committee.
Business Acumen
The Senior Engineer will help Senior Management to understand and to deal with technical and/or business situations in a manner that is likely to lead to a good outcome. This experience with business aspects will be used as a vehicle for improving financial performance and leadership development within Aavid Thermacore.
Qualifications

Education And/or Experience
Bachelors of Science (B.S.) degree in engineering with 15 or more years’ experience or a Master's degree (M.A.) in engineering with 10 or more years related experience and/or a PhD degree in Engineering with five or more years’ of experience.
Language Skills
Has the ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on complex topics to top management, engineering staff, customers, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
