Responsible to: Production Manager
The CNC Lathe Cell Team Leader is responsible for overseeing daily operations within the CNC turning cell, ensuring production targets, quality standards, and safety requirements are consistently met. This role combines hands-on machining expertise with leadership, coordination and continuous improvement responsibilities.
The post holder will be responsible for the following duties:
- Take responsibility for all engineering functions required to allow the efficient manufacture of component parts on CNC Lathe machines
- Train, mentor and upskill team members to build capability and flexibility
- Adhere to company policies and quality standards, including AS9100
- Perform and oversee machine setups and first-off approval
- Optimise machining processes for tolerance, surface finish, and cycle time
- Diagnose faults and analyse programs and methods to maximise machine efficiency and/or reduce risk of non-conformance
- Ensure compliance with engineering drawings and process specifications
- Liaise with tooling suppliers to source, trial, and optimise cutting tools
- Support continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives
- Communicate effectively across engineering, quality, and production teams
Job Specification
Essential Criteria
- Minimum HNC in an engineering discipline, such as mechanical or manufacturing engineering. Other engineering qualifications which at least meet the standard of an HNC will be considered.
- Minimum of 5 years experience in CNC turning, with strong capability in on and offline programming, setting, and process optimisation on Fanuc-based multi-axis CNC lathes and turn-mill machines
- Advanced PC literacy with ability to utilise manufacturing systems and Microsoft Office
- Strong ability to interpret complex engineering drawings
- Proven ability to plan, prioritise, and deliver against deadlines in a high-pressure manufacturing setting
- Advanced problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated leadership ability, with experience in training and motivating teams and driving performance
- Ability to work collaboratively across teams while taking ownership and initiative in decision-making
Desirable Criteria
- Working knowledge of CAD/CAM systems (e.g. Mastercam)
