Home Senior Conservator – Film Operations
The Senior Conservator will plan and carry out film handling and preparation, film treatments, identification, cataloguing, comparison and reference scanning activities to specified standards within the BFI National Archive Film Operations team. They will also collaborate in restoration and remastering projects with colleagues from conservation and other departments, as well as BFI Supplier framework, other archives and collection organisations.
Responsibilities
- Carry out, supervise and approve film handling, preparation and repair, film treatments, identification, cataloguing, comparison and reference scanning activities to specified quality standards; check and document the results including direct entry of information to the Axiell Collections database. Create appropriate digital proxy access elements as required.
- To carry out synchronisation and multi-element comparison and reconstruction, resulting from collections care, curatorial strategy, collections access, and business projects.
- Supervise the training and coaching of Film Conservators and trainees in all aspects of film identification, handling, preparation, repair, and documentation to foster a learning environment for professional development.
- Use innovative and creative solutions to complete technical work. This includes testing of various specific technical solutions; documentation of method or public presentation of knowledge through publications or conferences and other such events.
Person Specifications
- Experience working in film preservation, conservation, or restoration, in a Film Archive, or similar organisation.
- Thorough understanding of the generational relationships between a wide range of film elements and formats, and film laboratory processes. With demonstrable experience of identifying and assessing such relationships through examination and comparison.
- Ability to assess accurately the condition of film elements and recommend appropriate treatment and preservation measures.
- Experienced in conveying detailed technical insights through documentation, for example; condition reports, academic papers, and/or presentations.
- Proven coaching and/or supervisory skills to develop colleagues in technical processes.
